Yin wins in Malaysia; tourney records five aces

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia >> Ruoning Yin won for the second time in three weeks by closing with a 7-under 65 to break out of a three-way tie for the lead and win the Maybank Championship by one shot.

Two holes-in-one were made during the final round, bringing the total to five for the tournament.

Yin also won the Buick LPGA Shanghai that kicked off the “Asia Swing” on the LPGA Tour, which concludes next week in Japan.

Orlando City defeats Charlotte in playoff opener

ORLANDO, Fla.>> Facundo Torres scored in the first half, Martin Ojeda found the net in the second, and Pedro Gallese notched his fourth postseason clean sheet to lead Orlando City to a 2-0 victory over Charlotte FC on Sunday night in a best-of-three first-round match for the MLS Cup.

In a late Western Conference match, LAFC hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps in Los Angeles.

USWNT comes from behind to beat Iceland

NASHVILLE, Tenn.>> Lynn Williams and Lindsey Horan scored minutes apart in the second half and the United States rallied to beat Iceland 3-1 on Sunday. Forward Emma Sears made her debut for the United States and scored in stoppage time.

The Americans play Argentina on Wednesday in Louisville, Ky.

Fan dies after ambush

SAO PAULO>> Brazilian authorities said a Cruzeiro soccer fan has died after a roadside ambush by rival supporters in São Paulo state on Sunday morning.

The 30-year-old man was confirmed dead at a hospital in the city of Mairipora, 28 miles north of Sao Paulo. Local media reports said at least 12 fans were injured in the same attack.

Footage on Brazilian TV showed a bus on fire and several Cruzeiro fans lying on the sidewalk as Palmeiras supporters punched them and hit them with sticks.

Wade statue unveiled

MIAMI>> Dwyane Wade is now the first Miami Heat player with a statue outside the team’s arena. The Heat unveiled the statue Sunday,. Wade is Miami’s all-time leading scorer, and he and Udonis Haslem are the only players to have been on all three Heat teams that won NBA championships.

Half-marathion record set

VALENCIA, Spain>> Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha broke the men’s half-marathon record by just one second Sunday.

Kejelcha finished strongly to set a time of 57 minutes, 30 seconds, knocking a single second off the record set in 2021 by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo in Lisbon, Portugal.

Olsen leads Norwegian sweep in WCup opener

SOELDEN, Austria>> Alexander Steen Olsen held on to his first-run advantage to lead a Norwegian sweep of the podium at the season-opening men’s World Cup giant slalom on Sunday.

Defending overall champion Marco Odermatt skied out in the opening run.

Holding a slim lead after the first run, Steen Olsen finished 0.64 seconds ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen and was 0.65 faster than Atle Lie McGrath.

“That is what we have been dreaming of, everybody on the podium,” Steen Olsen said.
