FREMONT >> Initial attempts by a forensic veterinarian to identify the species of animals whose mutilated bodies were found Sunday at the Centerville Train Station were inconclusive and the remains are being sent to a specialized facility for further analysis and DNA testing, police said Tuesday.

Besides trying to identify the species of the animals, authorities also will try to determine exactly how they died.

Fremont police were contacted about 2:30 p.m. Sunday by Amtrak police who found what appeared to be a decapitated and eviscerated animal that was left on a park bench at the station, 37260 Fremont Blvd.

In a news release, police said there were several bags located next to the bench. In one of the bags, police found a second animal that appeared to be decapitated and in another bag they discovered animal intestines or internal organs, authorities said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Fremont Animal Services at 510-790-6635 and speak with Sgt. Antonio Ceniceros. For anonymous tips, text ‘Tip FremontPD’ followed by your short message to 888-777 or via the web atfremontpolice.gov/Tip.

Police said they would provide updated information as it becomes available.
