Rocky Mountain National Park is hosting the event “Fly Fishing in the Rockies” this Saturday, in coordination with the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

On June 21, participants of all ages and ability levels will cast from the banks of the Colorado River, showcasing skills achieved from a lifetime of practice, enjoying a casual pass time or just learning the basics of fly-fishing.

Participants will meet at the Holzwarth Historic Site parking area on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, and can show up anytime Saturday morning between 9 a.m. and noon. A quarter mile walk down the trail from the parking lot will get fishermen to the event location. National Parks Service staff and volunteers can be found near the Colorado River bridge.

Participants can stay for the duration of the program or just drop in, but either way, they’ll be able to learn how to tie a fly, cast and, hopefully, catch a fish. Basic fishing equipment will be provided. Junior Rangers interested in attending can earn their Junior Angler Badge.

Anyone 16 and older who intends to fish must have a State of Colorado fishing license.

When fishing wraps up, Kawuneeche Valley Restoration Collaborative will lead a walking tour, teaching participants about ongoing wetlands restoration projects happening in the Kawuneeche Valley. That tour will last roughly an hour.

The event is free, but park entry fees apply and a timed entry reservation is required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For those without a reservation, more will be released at 7 p.m. the evening prior on Recreation.gov.

The National Sports Center for the Disabled provides adaptive lessons for individuals and groups of people with disabilities in a variety of action sports, adventure sports, and competitive programs. The organization offers opportunities for those with physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral diagnosis to participate in sports and recreation, helping athletes build self-confidence and improve overall health.
