Each week, The Denver Post provides an update on the Rockies’ path to becoming the worst MLB team in the modern era.

Record entering Saturday night: 23-74

On Pace for: 38-124

Infamy Tracker: With their 6-4 win over the Twins Friday night, the Rockies began their so-called second half of the season with an impressive victory. However, Colorado has the second-hardest remaining schedule in the majors in the second half, with opponents holding a .517 winning percentage. Cincinnati has the most challenging schedule after the All-Star break, with opponents owning a .522 winning percentage. The Rockies’ 73 losses before the All-Star break were the most before the break since 1933, the year of the first All-Star Game. The 2024 White Sox held the previous worst record at 27-71.

Where others were after 97 games: 2024 White Sox 27-70; 1962 Mets 24-73; 2003 Tigers 26-71; 1916 Athletics 19-77 (one tie); 1935 Braves 25-72; 1988 Orioles 31-66; 2019 Tigers 30-67; 1932 Red Sox 26-71; 1904 Senators 21-72 (four ties); 1899 Cleveland Spiders 17-80.

Telling statistics: The Rockies entered the All-Star break 35 1/2 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the National League West, the second-largest gap behind a division leader at the break by any big-league team since 1969. Only the 2018 Orioles — 28-69, 39 1/2 games out in the AL East — were further behind.

Coming up: The Rockies wrap up a three-game series with Minnesota on Sunday, then host the Cardinals for three games. After a day off on Thursday, Colorado faces a six-game road trip through Baltimore and Cleveland.

Player to watch: Third baseman Ryan McMahon, a possible target as the July 31 trade deadline nears, hit his 14th home run Friday, his second homer over his last four games. McMahon, a contender for a Gold Glove, has the second-most home runs on the club behind catcher Hunter Goodman’s 17. Friday, McMahon hit safely in back-to-back games for the first time since hitting safely in three games in a row from June 19-21. The third baseman is slashing .213/.310/.384 with a 32% strikeout rate.
