Ernie Howlett Park was the place to be for horse lovers over the weekend, challenging some of the West Coast’s top equestrians.
The Portuguese Bend National Horse Show returned to the Rolling Hills Estates arena for the 66th time. The horse show, organized by the Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital, is also a fundraiser for the pulmonology, sleep medicine and ophthalmology departments at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
The show, nationally rated by the United States Equestrian Federation, offered rings of equestrian competition, as well as classes, including the family-favorite stick horse class for children on Sunday.
In the competition rings, the action included the prestigious Pacific Coast Horse Shows Association Horsemanship Medal Finals for riders 14 and under and those 18-34, as well as the horse shows association’s Victor Hugo-Vidal Adult Horsemanship Class for riders 35 and older. Riders also competed in the $10,000 Harman Jr. -A/O Jumper Classic and the $15,000 Seahorse Jumper Classic.
The event gets entire families involved in planning the weekend, with hometown fun highlighted by pony rides, puppet shows and face painting.
