



The New York Knicks hired Mike Brown on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau.
The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years.
Brown wasn’t out of work long after getting fired by the Sacramento Kings during last season.
Brown had led the Kings to the postseason in 2023 — their first appearance since 2006 — and was voted the Coach of the Year. He also won the award in Cleveland, where he led the Cavaliers to the 2007 NBA Finals.
Pacers exec confirms Haliburton out for year
The Indiana Pacers won’t be rushing guard Tyrese Haliburton back to the court next season as he recovers from a torn right Achilles tendon, Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard said in a news conference.
Haliburton suffered his Achilles injury early in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
He had surgery June 23 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, the Pacers announced.
Magic, Banchero agree on 5-year extension
Paolo Banchero has signed the richest contract in Magic history.
The five-year extension is worth $239 million and could reach about $287 million should he become eligible for a supermax deal.
Banchero was the rookie of the year in 2022-23, living up to his billing after being the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He was an All-Star in his second season but suffered an oblique injury early this past campaign.
He finished the season averaging 25.9 points and 7.5 rebounds, both career highs.
Former Wolves star Love included in 3-team trade
The Clippers have traded guard Norman Powell to the Miami Heat and have acquired forward John Collins from the Utah Jazz in a three-team, multiplayer deal that also includes a draft pick.
The Clippers will send a 2027 second-round pick to the Jazz and the Heat will send Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love to the Jazz as part of the deal.
The veteran 36-year-old Love is entering his 18th NBA season. He had been in Miami since 2022 and averaged 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds last season in 23 games. He can be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Fleyers, York agree to 5-year, $25.75M deal
Cam York and the Philadelphia Flyers agreed to terms on a five-year contract worth $25.75 million.
York, 25, will count $5.15 million against the salary cap through the 2029-30 NHL season.
That price could turn out to be a bargain with the upper limit rising from $88 million this past season to $113.5 million by 2027-28.
York, the 14th pick in the 2019 draft has 77 points in 235 games for the Flyers, who have not made the playoffs since 2020.
Tampa’s Johnson retires after 13 seasons, two rings
Tyler Johnson has announced his retirement after playing 13 NHL seasons and winning the Stanley Cup twice with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Johnson had battled injuries in recent years and is set to turn 35 on July 29.
He skated in 863 regular-season and playoff games since debuting in the league in 2013, putting up 498 points.
Johnson was part of the Lightning’s core when they reached the final in 2015 and helped them win back to back titles in 2020 and 2021.
Utah re-signs McBain to 4-year, $21.25M contract
The Utah Mammoth have re-signed Jack McBain to a five-year contract worth $21.25 million.
McBain will count $4.25 million against the salary cap through the 2029-30 NHL season on the deal announced a little over 24 hours since the team elected salary arbitration with the restricted free agent forward.

Clark-Bueckers game moved to Mavs’ arena
The Dallas Wings will try again showcasing a Caitlin Clark-Paige Bueckers matchup at the home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
The Wings said the club is moving the Aug. 1 game against Clark and the Indiana Fever to American Airlines Center.
The Wings normally play at the 7,000-seat College Park Center on the Texas-Arlington campus.

Belgian rider Tim Merlier won the crash-marred third stage of the Tour de France in a photo finish and Mathieu Van der Poel kept the yellow jersey.
Defending champion Tadej Pogacar and two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard — the main contenders — finished safely as they rolled in with the pack.

The Canterbury Park Hall of Fame’s five newest inductees will be honored in a ceremony on Friday at the Shakopee racetrack.
The Class of 2025 includes thoroughbred owner Joseph Novogratz of Excelsior, former jockey and current trainer Nik Goodwin, retired Minnesota-bred thoroughbred Ready to Runaway, Carin Offerman, whose contributions to Minnesota racing date back to the early 1980s, and media relations and public relations manager Jeff Maday.
This quintet joins a group of more than 50 individuals and horses that comprise the best of Minnesota horse racing.
