Stagecrafters in Royal Oak is gearing up to celebrate a major milestone for its upcoming season.
The theater group’s 70th season kicks off later this year at the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak.
So, what’s allowed Stagecrafters to last for 70 years?
“Stagecrafters is special because it is truly a theatre for the community, by the community,” president Daryl Ziegelman said. “For 70 years, we have brought people together to create and experience exceptional live theatre. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization. Whether they are on stage, behind the scenes or working in other vital roles, their passion and dedication shine through in every production.”
While the community is entertained by the group’s performances, its own members are touched, as well.
“Beyond the performances, Stagecrafters is a place where friendships are formed, skills are developed and artistic expression is nurtured,” Ziegelman said. “We take great pride in our ability to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone, whether a lifelong theatre lover or a first-time audience member, feels at home.”
The 70th season at Stagecrafters is extra unique because it features “shows that represent both our history and our future.”
“We aimed for a dynamic and balanced mix of beloved classics that honor our roots, fresh productions that appeal to newer audiences and diverse stories that reflect the broad interests of our community,” Ziegelman said. “To ensure we were delivering what our audiences truly want, we conducted surveys with our patrons, members and the greater community. Their feedback helped shape not just our 70th season, but also the planning for seasons 70 through 75.”
While the audience is always on the minds of planners at Stagecrafters, Ziegelman says their “selection committees also evaluate each show to ensure it aligns with the mission of the venue. Directors then present the top contenders, allowing us to build a season that excites and engages our community.”
While the goal of any theater company is to entertain an audience, Ziegelman adds that Stagecrafters hopes to also inspire those who experience the Royal Oak company’s art.
“We hope audiences walk away from this season feeling inspired, entertained and more connected to the power of live theatre,” Ziegelman says. “Whether it’s a show that sparks nostalgia, introduces them to a new perspective or simply brings joy, we want every experience at Stagecrafters to be meaningful and memorable. …
“(We) want our audiences to feel a sense of belonging, whether they’ve been attending for years or are stepping into our theatre for the first time. Our productions aim to ignite conversations, stir emotions and remind people of the magic that happens when a community comes together to celebrate storytelling.”
