Sharks forward William Eklund said everything was “fine” late Saturday after he sustained a serious cut on his left wrist in Team Sweden’s exhibition game against the Czech Republic in Brno.

Eklund was checking Filip Hronek along the boards to the right of the Czech net when Hronek’s skate inadvertently came up and caught Eklund in the wrist area. Eklund immediately dropped his stick, covered up the cut with his right hand, and quickly skated to Sweden’s bench, where he began to receive medical attention.

Eklund, 22, was later taken to a local hospital, where he posted a photo of the heavily bandaged area in an Instagram Story on his account with the caption, “Everything is fine, thanks for all the support.”

Eklund’s agent, Todd Diamond, told Bay Area News Group on Sunday that Eklund rejoined his teammates late Saturday night.

Diamond said Eklund, in conjunction with the Sharks’ training and medical staff, will be reevaluated by a hand surgeon on Monday morning in Stockholm.

A statement issued by Team Sweden said it was too soon to determine if the injury would prevent Eklund from playing in the upcoming IIHF World Championships in his hometown of Stockholm, an indication, it seems, that the forward avoided a major injury. Sweden plays seven preliminary round games, with the first on Friday against Slovakia. The gold medal game is on May 25.

Eklund was the Sharks’ second-leading scorer this past season with 58 points in 77 games. He was looking forward to representing his country at the World Championships for the first time, with an eye on being on Sweden’s roster for next year’s Winter Olympics in Italy. He was left off Sweden’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster in February.
