‘Minecraft’ digs in at the box office

“A Minecraft Movie” injected some life into the slumbering box office with a record-breaking $157-million domestic opening and $144 million overseas.

The movie, starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black and Jennifer Coolidge, doubled some pre-weekend estimates. It took the top slot for a video game adaptation, eclipsing “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” launch in 2023, which grossed $146.4 million.

Based on the 2011 video game, the film has delivered a welcome hit for Warner Bros., giving the beleaguered studio the largest domestic opening of the year.
