The wins keep coming.
On Tuesday night at Jack Hamlin Gym, the Woodland Christian girls’ varsity basketball team reached the coveted 20th game in their win streak, defeating Sierra Delta League rivals Rio Vista 72-13.
“Coming into a new league (the Sierra Delta League) this year, we knew Rio Vista would be one of the teams to beat,” Cardinals head coach Shiloh Sorbello said. “They went undefeated in the league last year and returned their two best players. However, we proved tonight that our win at their place a few weeks ago wasn’t a fluke.
The Cardinals (22-5, 13-0 SDL) have taken the league and their nonleague opponents by storm during their massive 20-game win streak. With one more regular-season game to go, they have bested last year’s 17-game streak by three games.
Senior star wing Teagan Hayes had 17 points in three quarters of action, while sophomore forward Bailee Broward had 14 points, including three 3-pointers.
Senior point guard Keziah Maldonado-Lemus had 13 in three quarters, while junior guard Ellie Sumner had 10 points, including nine in the first quarter. Sophomore stars Siena Sorbello and Elena Ganyo each shot 4-for-4 from inside the arc and finished with 9 and 8 points, respectively.
The Cardinals jumped out to a massive 26-4 lead in the first quarter, utilizing suffocating full-court pressure to force turnovers and get easy looks at the basket. With the results of certain games seemingly decided before tipoff, the Cardinals have the luxury of focusing on specific aspects of their game that need improvement while juggling a live game.“One of our focuses the last few weeks has been getting great shots, as opposed to bad, decent, or even good shots,” Sorbello said. “The girls have really bought into that concept and are routinely passing up tough shots for great shots. We had an effective field goal percentage tonight of 63%, which is amazing given the fact that we still shot 17 threes. We shot 71% from two-point range and 29% from downtown.”
Elsewhere on the stat sheet was Maldonado-Lemus with 9 assists, Hayes with 4 assists and Sumner with 3. Maldonado-Lemus also led the way with 7 steals, while Hayes and Sorbello each had 4 takeaways.
The Cardinals’ next challenge is to make it 21 games in a row when they host Mesa Verde on Thursday for their senior night.
“It’s bittersweet to think that it’s senior night for this group,” Sorbello said. “This season has flown by. We talked in the locker room today about how that is our last game until playoffs when every game is packed with win-or-go-home pressure. We will enjoy Thursday night and send the seniors off with lots of playing time and, hopefully, their 21st win in a row.
“We are playing outstanding team basketball, and we’re hopeful that this is a breakthrough year when we can get to a section final game at the Golden 1 Center. With the boys also looking like a top-2 seed, it would be extra special for the school if we could play back-to-back with them for section championships.”
