It was Trout’s 14th home run of the season and first of June.

Rengifo also had a home run in the fifth inning and right-hander Jaime Barria gave up two runs over five innings in his third consecutive strong start since returning to the rotation. In those three outings, Barria has given up three total runs over 15 innings.

Barria gave up three hits with one walk and had three strikeouts as the Angels have won all three of his starts since May 22. He also got timely help from his defense. In addition to Trout’s play in center field, Moniak ended the third by sprinting into foul territory and reaching deep into the stands to snag Nico Hoerner’s popup. Moniak made another marvelous catch on Hoerner’s sinking liner in the eighth.

A half-inning after Trout’s home run, the Cubs took a 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Trey Mancini and a run-scoring single from Miguel Amaya. Taking advantage of a rare start in left field, Rengifo tied it for the Angels a half-inning later with a long home run to center, his fourth.

The Angels nearly fell behind again in the sixth inning when hard-throwing right-hander Ben Joyce walked the bases loaded with two outs before getting out of the jam when Mancini grounded out to second baseman Brandon Drury. Joyce, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, threw 20 of his 27 pitches faster than 100 mph.

The Angels’ four-run sixth inning started with a one-out walk by Matt Thaiss, followed by a single by Drury. Against Cubs right-hander Mark Leiter Jr., Rengifo gave the Angels a 3-2 lead on a two-out single to right.

Zach Neto followed Rengifo with a walk to load the bases and Moniak drilled a three-run double into the right field corner. In 16 games since Moniak joined the big league club last month, Moniak has 10 extra-base hits and 10 RBIs.

After Joyce delivered his scoreless inning out of the bullpen, left-hander Aaron Loup pitched a scoreless inning and right-hander Sam Bachman went the final two innings without allowing the Cubs to score.
