One of the biggest moments in Monday’s PIAA Class 4A semifinal between Northwestern Lehigh and Valley View came in the bottom of the fourth inning.

With the score tied at two and Valley View runners on first and second, senior designated player Emily Moyles put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Freshman Ashlyn Palickar followed with a single to score both, giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead.

They would win it, 5-4, on Abbi Call’s RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to advance to the Class 4A final against Kennard-Dale on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Penn State University Nittany Lion Softball Park’s Beard Field.

“To me, the thing that stuck out the most (Monday) was Emily bunting two girls over to set up Ashlyn Palickar, who whacked the ball for the (go-ahead) hit,” Valley View coach Mia Wascura said. “People are doing what they need to do. We’re executing at the right time.”

Moyles does not garner as much attention as fellow seniors Kalli Karwowski and Taylor Cawley. She just quietly does her job and that’s the way she likes it.

“I don’t like to be in the spotlight with anything I do,” Moyles said. “I just like to be a part of everything. I don’t really care if I’m recognized. I just like to be here.”

She definitely has been there for the Cougars all season.

“We wouldn’t be where we are at right now without Emily,” Karwowski said. “I think she is one of the most underrated players on our team. She definitely should get more recognition and talked about a lot more.”

Despite twice breaking two fingers while diving back to a base, Moyles is batting .324 (22 for 68) with seven doubles, four home runs, 23 runs and 26 RBIs.

“She’s been given a chance and she’s stepping up,” Wascura said. “When people think DP, they think big-time hitter. She’s a big-time hitter. But she can bunt, she can catch, she can play third. At practice, I’ve had her playing second base. She’s the definition of a utility. She’s a kid who will do anything to help the team.”

As much as she likes to hit, if she is asked to bunt in a certain situation, she gladly will put one down.

“I just know every time I go up to bat I have a job to do,” Moyles said. “If it’s to bunt, to hit, whatever I have to do I’ll do it. I’m just glad to be on the team and be a part of this special group.”

Wascura has noticed, too, that she has served as a mentor to Valley View freshman catcher Maggie Hallett.

“We grew really close this season,” Moyles said. “She’s kind of like my little sister. I feel like she looks up to me because I am a senior and she’s a freshman. I feel like my job is to help anyone in any way. I catch for my travel team, so I know the struggles with catching. If she has any questions, I’m just always here for her. That’s the same for everyone on the team.”

After graduation, Moyles plans to attend Penn State-Scranton, study veterinary science and continue her softball career. She is hoping, though, for one more victory as a high school player.

“I think it’s amazing. We’ve come so far and I’m so glad we get to go to the state championship with this group,” Moyles said. “We’re all so special. We all work together so well, we all care about each other. We would do anything for everyone.

“It would mean everything to win.”
