Hospital auxiliary to host scholarship fundraisers
St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary invites the public to two upcoming fundraisers. Scrubs on Wheels, offering an assortment of scrubs, shoes and other medical accessories, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 9, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 10. Linda’s Linens sale, featuring a selection of high thread-count sheets, pillows, blankets and throws, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 24. Both fundraisers will be held in Rooms 3 and 3A near the West Entrance at the hospital, 1500 South Lake Park Ave., Hobart. A percentage of the proceeds from the sales will go to the Auxiliary in support of the 2022 Scholarship Fund to benefit students pursuing a career in the medical field. Hammond inaugural Live Arts Fest event
Hammond Parks and Recreation will host Live Arts Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the Hammond Sportsplex, 6630 Indianapolis Blvd. This new event will feature 3D chalk artist Nate Baranowski; urban artist Wyatt Ochoa; cultural dancers Ballet Folklorico Yolotzin; and live music from local band Almond Grove. Service helps adults earn their high school diplomas
Merrillville Adult Education (MAE), located in Merrillville High School, 276 E. 68th Place, can help individuals earn their high school equivalency credentials by preparing them to complete the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). MAE’s free preparation classes are designed for students to go from their current knowledge to a point where passing the HiSET the first time is a reasonable goal. Instruction is available Mondays through Thursdays. Preparation classes are not required prior to taking the HiSET. Upcoming 2021 HiSET test dates include: Sept. 15 and 16, registration deadline Sept. 9; Sept. 29 and 30, registration deadline Sept. 23; Oct. 12 and 13, registration deadline Oct. 7; Oct. 27 and 28, registration deadline Oct. 21; and Dec. 8 and 9, registration deadline Dec. 2. The State of Indiana has changed from the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) test. Any person who has not passed all five subjects on the TASC test has until Sept. 30 to successfully complete the test. Testing dates to complete TASC subjects include Sept. 15 and 16, registration deadline Sept. 9. Gary mayor to address Chamber luncheon
The Gary Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly General Membership Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 13 at Hard Rock Casino, Council Oak Steak House, 5400 W. 29th Ave., Gary. Doors will open at 11 a.m. for networking. The featured guest speaker will be Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince. He will provide information, updates and developments concerning Gary, the business community and Northwest Indiana. The meeting and luncheon are open to all interested parties.
