Haziel Parra scored on a pass from Nicolas Topete 45 seconds in, and the Mariners’ boys soccer team beat host Santa Cruz 4-1 on Friday to maintain its slim lead in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League standings with two matches remaining in the regular season.
The Mariners (11-4-1 overall, 6-1-1 SCCAL) avenged their lone league loss, a 2-1 setback to the Cardinals (11-6-1, 5-2-1) on Jan. 22.
Topete and Damian Garcia each notched two assists, and the Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half.
“Our boys continue to work on improving with team chemistry and it’s been a great asset for us going into the final stretch of the season,” said Roberto Zuniga, the Mariners’ head coach.
Nami Banks scored on a pass from Garcia in the 10th minute, Ivan Zavala finished off a pass from Topete in the 26th minute, and Josiah Siqueiros finished off a pass from Garcia in the 39th minute.
Santa Cruz scored in the final five minutes of the match.Aptos goalie Noah Curran made four saves.
The Mariners, who have played one more game than Harbor (14-2-1, 6-1-0), host the Pirates on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
At Harbor 5, Soquel 0 >> Alex Aparicio had two goals and an assist, and the Pirates stayed in the SCCAL title hunt on Friday.
Javi Calles had a goal and an assist for the Pirates (14-2-1, 6-1-0). Diego Cortes and Jair Martinez also scored.
Moi Hernandez also registered an assist.
Goalie Damian Escalante made three saves for the Pirates, who play at Aptos (11-4-2, 6-1-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
St. Francis 3, at Anzar 1 >> Luis Jimenez-Saenz scored twice, and the Sharks snapped a five-match winless streak in PCAL Santa Lucia Division play Friday.
Aidan Berrelleza also scored for the Sharks (2-8-3, 2-4-3). He played goalie in the first half and made four saves.
Evan Salguero and Sam Galvan registered assists.
Coach Valentin Berrelleza praised Vince Tovar for his defense, and Salguero and Roger de la Torre for their play in the middle.
St. Francis (2-8-3, 2-4-3) hosts Marina (7-4-0, 7-0-0) on Monday at 3:30 p.m.

At Watsonville 50, Soledad 36 >> Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 25 points and five steals, and the third-place Wildcatz won their PCAL Gabilan Division game Friday.
Junior Stephanie Martinez had 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals for the Wildcatz (17-5, 7-3), who play at Monterey on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
St. Francis 53, at Greenfield 44 >> Freshman guard Liliana Whitmeyer had 24 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and the Sharks secured no worse than a share of the PCAL Cypress Division title on Friday.
Sophomore guard Maya Calfee had 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and two steals for the Sharks (21-2, 12-0), who have to games remaining in the regular season. Keira Grio and Natalie Stott each scored six points.
Sophomore Aleena Salas scored 16 points to lead the Bruins (4-10, 4-5). Lesley Santiago chipped in with nine points.
St. Francis hosts Santa Catalina (0-15, 0-10) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
At PCS 50, Pajaro Valley 30 >> Sophomore forward Kat Buckley had 21 points and six rebounds for the fourth-place Pumas in their PCAL Cypress Division win Friday.
Senior guard Addie Payne had 16 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and five assists for the Pumas (11-9, 7-5). Sophomore guard Nina Gramkowski had six points, six rebounds and seven steals. Junior guard Julia Guth pulled down eight rebounds.
PCS hosts Burlingame (14-5) in a nonconference game in Santa Cruz on Saturday at 2 p.m.
MVC 58, at North Salinas 33 >> Seniors Amya Tellez and Sophia Cortes each scored 24 points, and the Mustangs snapped their five-game losing streak in PCAL Mission Division play Friday.
MVC earned some breathing room in the second quarter and kept the Vikings arm’s length the rest of the second half.
Sophomore Corina Randolph scored 22 points to lead the Vikings (1-21, 0-10).
MVC hosts Stevenson (16-4, 5-3) on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Girls soccer
PCS 1, at Pajaro Valley 1 >> Piper Garrett scored on a cross from Farrin O’Hara in the 30th minute, and the Pumas tied the PCAL Mission Division champion Grizzlies on Friday.
Grizzlies senior Valeria Acosta scored on her first shot 1:10 seconds into the game. It was her 44th goal of the season and 88th in her career.
Amelie Pan hit the crossbar with a few minutes left and led PCS with five shots on goal.
Goalies Kat Buckley and Hailey Woelfel each played a half for PCS and made two saves apiece.
PCS (6-6-2, 4-3-2) plays Alisal (8-8-2, 5-4-2) at Santa Cruz High on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Pajaro Valley (17-1-2, 9-0-2) hosts North Salinas (1-13-1, 0-8-1) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
At MVC 2, North Salinas 0 >> Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Groves made four saves, and the Mustangs posted a shutout in PCAL Mission Division action Friday.
Sophomore Tea Knowles scored in the 27th minute on a bad clearance of the North Salinas’ goalie.
Sophomore Riley Rutter added some insurance when she finished off a pass from senior captain Ashlyn Hoffman in the 42nd minute.

Boys basketball
St. Francis 64, at Greenfield 52 >> Senior Nash Horton recorded his fifth triple-double of the season, and the PCAL Cypress Division champion Sharks moved a step closer to a perfect league campaign Friday.
Horton finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 steals for the Sharks (20-3, 11-0). Robert Gomez made five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 23 points. Jesse Navarro pulled down nine rebounds.
The Sharks outscored the Bruins 16-3 in the second quarter and led 29-15 at the half.
Junior guard Jonathan Miranda scored a game-high 25 for the Bruins (10-11, 4-6).
St. Francis hosts PCS (3-13, 1-9) in the teams’ regular-season finale on Thursday at 7 p.m.
At Gonzales 50, PCS 36 >> Thomas May scored 14 points, but the Pumas’ rally came up short in their PCAL Mission Division loss Friday.
PCS trailed by 12 points early. It pulled within four points in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans pulled away.
Ian Bulfin had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pumas (3-13, 1-9). Junior Son-Mai Clark added five points and five rebounds.
PCS hosts Greenfield (10-11, 4-6) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At Cabrillo 82, Foothill 50 >> Freshman forward Gabby Brooks made five 3s and scored 23 of her 27 points in the first half, and the Seahawks won their Coast Conference South Division game Friday.
Freshman guard Sydney Chesnut also made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points for the Seahawks (16-8, 5-2) plays at Las Positas on Monday at 3 p.m.
Sophomore guard Jade Crum scored 15 points, and sophomore forward Renee Parker scored 13 points.
Sophomore forward Jasia Collins and sophomore guard Xochitl Neely each scored 12 points for the Owls (7-18, 1-7).
Men’s basketball
At Cabrillo 97, Foothill 84 >> Freshman forward Johnny Gasaloga scored a team-high 19 points, and the Seahawks won their Coast Conference South Division game Friday.
Freshman guard Skylarr Redwood scored 16 points for Cabrillo, sophomore guard Max Parmigiani scored 15, and sophomore forward Cullen Cleaves chipped in with 11 points.
The banged up Seahawks came through despite being without starter Zavier Sims and battling foul trouble.
“We had some young guys step up tonight and it was really good to see,” Seahawks coach James Page said.
Freshman guard Axel Castrejon scored a game-high 27 points for the Owls (7-18, 3-6), and freshman guard Wyatt Sparling scored 20 points.
Cabrillo (15-10, 7-2) plays at defending state champion West Valley (21-3, 8-0) in Saratoga on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Men’s volleyball
UC Santa Cruz 3, at Lakeland 0 >> Dylan Foreman had nine kills in the Banana Slugs’ 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 sweep in Plymouth, Wisconsin, on Friday.
Riley Norman had eight kills for the Banana Slugs (8-5). Caio Valente had 27 assists and nine digs.
Ben Busalacchi had seven kills to lead the Muskies (4-5).
UCSC 3, at Concordia 0 >> Caio Valente had 32 assists, nine digs, two aces and two blocks in the Banana Slugs’ 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 sweep in Wisconsin, on Friday.
AJ Contreras had 15 kills for UCSC (9-5). Riley Norman had 12 kills and four assists.
Lucas Beres had nine kills to lead the Falcons (2-7).
