Santa Cruz High star senior runner Eli Fitchen-Young broke another school record in as many weeks.

Fitchen-Young took first out of 600 runners in the boys’ 3,200-meter race at the prestigious Dublin Distance Fiesta at Dublin High on Saturday. He finished in 8 minutes, 56.43 seconds.

Fitchen-Young, a Duke University commit, edged Los Gatos senior Aydon Stefanopoulos (8:57.33) for the win.

Fitchen-Young said it has been a journey competing in the event over the past four years, which made his win extra rewarding.

“It was incredible to have my family, coach (Greg) Brock, and a group of friends and fellow racers there cheering me on and supporting me today,” he said. “I am stoked on the win and a small PR. The Dublin Distance fiesta is truly a special and unique experience every single year, and I want to thank Chris Williams, the meet director, for his incredible commitment and positive outlook to the sport.”

The Cardinal star’s time was the fastest by a Central Coast Section runner this season. It topped the time set by Piedmont Hills senior Yosef Berhan (9:18.23) at the Dan Gabor Invitational on March 1.

The Cardinals’ previous school record of 8:57.13 was set by Fitchen-Young at the 2024 Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Fitchen-Young broke a 34-year-old school record in the 800 a week ago at the Santa Cruz County Meet of Champions II, when he ran a 1:53.58 for the fastest time run by a CCS athlete this season.

Watsonville’s Desi Salinas-Holz, Damien Amado Villarruel, Jared Sunga, and Nain Garcia-Ferria took 17th in the distance medley relay in 11:27.19.

Santa Cruz sophomore Nico Van Der Meer took 208th out of 1,331 runners in the 1,600 in 4:39.90. MVC junior Gavin Beckmen took 236th (4:42.34). Cardinals sophomore Caelen Harris took 238th (4:42.51) and freshman teammate Anders Laurberg took 285th (4:45.05).

Scotts Valley junior Aaron Weiss took 15th out of 973 runners in the 800 (1:57.06). MVC junior Conor Gilliam took 22nd (1:58.62).

Christopher Garlic Classic >> Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo took first in the long jump in a school-record 22 feet, 2.5 inches at the Christopher Garlic Classic in Gilroy on Saturday. He broke his old mark by one inch.

Soquel senior Logan Walters took first in the 100 (11.01) and third in the pole vault (12-6), and MVC senior Joshua Tepoorten. took first in the 200 (22.88) and third in the 400 (51.13).

Watsonville senior Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar took first in the triple jump (42-8.5), and Aptos senior Anthony Sandford-Carroll took first in the 800 (2:03.56).

Watsonville junior Desi Salinas-Holz took second in the 1,600 (4:45.95), and Soquel senior Tomas Church took second in the high jump (6-2).

Scotts Valley junior Anton Khomenko took third in the 100 (11.30), Pajaro Valley junior Giovanni Villanueva took third in the 110 hurdles (18.41), and the Grizzlies took third in the 4×400 (4:01.62).

Hollister (91.5) took first in the 21-team event. Pajaro Valley (32) took sixth and Watsonville (31) tied for seventh.

Girls track and field

Dublin Distance Fiesta >> Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve took seventh out of 598 runners in the 800 in 2:14.23 at the prestigious Dublin Distance Fiesta at Dublin High on Saturday.

Watsonville’s Lizbeth Gomez Abrica, Aileen Reyes, Azucena Sandoval, and Katelynn Ruiz took 11th in the distance medley in 13:21.74.

Santa Cruz senior Heidi Green took 17th in the 800 (2:18.46). Scotts Valley junior Dylan Turzak took 96th (2:29.69). Cardinals senior Amelia Palm took 114th (2:31.34) and 117 Scotts Valley junior Jennifer Brownfield took 117th (2:31.52).

Brownfield took 167th out of 709 runners in the 1,600. She finished in 5:37.07. Falcons senior Violet McCutchen took 209th (5:42.17). Santa Cruz junior Chloe Hood took 230th (5:45.10).

Santa Cruz freshman Isla Roake took 57th out of 271 runners in the 3,200 (11:43.60).

Christopher Garlic Classic >> SLV senior Naomi Seastrom took first in the 100 hurdles (16.94) and 300 hurdles (46.30) at the Christopher Garlic Classic in Gilroy on Saturday.

Aptos junior Maya Schiro took first in the 3,200 (11:49.31) and SLV senior Orea Pollock took first in the high jump (5-0).

Pajaro Valley took second in the 4×400 (4:41.60), and Watsonville senior Jocelyn Guzman took third in the 400 (1:05.38).

Westmont (86) of Campbell took first out of 22 teams. SLV (30) tied for seventh and MVC (23.5) took 10th.

High school softball

MVC goes 2-0 in doubleheader >> The Mustangs earned a nonleague doubleheader sweep on Saturday, beating Aptos 9-6 and Presentation of San Jose 16-11.

Senior Kayla Fullalove-Silveira had four hits, including two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Gianna Johnson had five hits, four RBI and four runs scored for MVC. Junior Samantha Bertoldi had three hits, including a solo home run, three RBI, and four runs scored. Sophomore Ava Alvarado had three hits, four RBI, thee runs scored

MVC (6-6, 0-3) plays at North Monterey County (0-8, 0-2) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

High school baseball

Soquel 7, at Leland 4; 9 inn. >> Brady Downs had two walks and scored twice in the unbeaten Knights’ nonleague win Saturday.

Soquel broke open a 2-all game with its five-run outburst in the top of the ninth inning. The Chargers scored twice in the bottom half of the frame.

Jake Escalante had three hits and scored a run for Soquel. Hudson Summerrill had two hits and scored a run.

Dylan Hull earned the win after giving up three hits and one unearned run over five innings of relief. He struck out six batters.

Soquel (10-0, 1-0) hosts Santa Cruz (2-2, 1-0) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Scotts Valley 8, at MVC 4 >> Monte Jordan had three hits, three stolen bases, one RBI, and scored three runs in the Falcons’ nonleague win Saturday.

Scotts Valley stole 14 bases and MVC stole nine.

Lukas Bloom had a hit and three RBI for the Falcons (5-4). Clayton Pryor and Owen Martin each had a hit and two runs scored. Isaac Martin had two hits and scored a run.

Tyson Shaw had two hits, four stolen bases, and scored a run for the MVC (7-2). Carter Wright, Parker Brown, and Jackson Haddad each had a hit and one RBI.

On Tuesday, MVC plays at Pacific Grove (2-5) at 4 p.m., and Scotts Valley plays at Harbor at 4:30 p.m.

At Sacred Heart Prep 4, SLV 3; 8 inn. >> Senior Jaden Shabry had three hits — two doubles and a home run — two RBI and a run scored in the Cougars’ nonleague loss Saturday.

Sophomore Larrabee Mitchell had a hit, stolen bases, and run scored for the Cougars (1-6, 0-1).

Reliever Nico Pollioni earned the win for the Gators. Jordan Renteria took the loss.

SLV hosts Aptos (1-5, 0-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

At Mission College Prep 9, Aptos 7 >> Isaiah Work doubled, homered, drove in four runs, and scored twice for the Mariners in their nonleague loss in San Luis Obispo on Saturday.

Dominick Faria scored twice for the Mariners. Chris Verdia, Finn Cormier, and Dom Castillo each had a hit and run scored. Samuel Garcia had a hit and one RBI.

Joe Villa had three hits, two RBI, two stolen bases, and three runs scored for the Royals (6-3).

Aptos plays at SLV on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

College baseball

At Gavilan 8, Cabrillo 6: Kaiden Hoapili had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference South Division loss Saturday.

Oscar Knapp had two hits and one RBI for the Seahawks, and Jayson Schmeisser had two hits, including a triple, and scored a run.

Josh Becks earned the win in relief for the Rams (8-18, 3-3), and Seahawks starter Anders Page-Roth took the loss.

Cabrillo (10-15, 3-3) plays at Ohlone (22-4, 5-1) on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
