SXU speech clinic secures $25K grant

Saint Xavier University’s Ludden Speech and Language Clinic received a $25,000 grant from the Helen V. Brach Foundation, allowing the clinic to offer area families impacted by communication disorders with no-fee services and programs. The clinic serves more than 1,000 residents each year. Senior Health Fair

in Evergreen Park

The Evergreen Park Fire Department presents its fourth annual Senior Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the fire station, 9000 S. Kedzie Ave. Many vendors will be on hand as well as free health screenings. Snacks will be available and door prizes will be awarded. The event is free and open to area seniors and their caregivers.

Hazardous waste collection offered

in Oak Forest

Oak Forest will host a household hazardous waste collection for the general public from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10 at the Public Works lot, 15800 S. Lorel Avenue. Acceptable products include aerosol cans; oil-based paints; motor oil, anti-freeze, and gasoline; auto, boat and household batteries; solvents and strippers; pesticides, insecticides and herbicides; cleaning products; pool chemicals; unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals; and mercury. Unacceptable products include: industrial, commercial and agricultural waste; latex paint; fireworks; ammunition; sharps or syringes; propane tanks; smoke detectors; gas cylinders; radioactive material; regular garbage; and fire extinguishers.

Palos Township Health Service provides screenings

The Palos Township Health Service offers low-cost screenings from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 20 and 9 a.m. to noon June 28 at its offices, 10802 S. Roberts Road. Available are a Healthy Heart Screen, which requires a 12-hour fast, for $65 as well as a $25 vitamin D screen and a $15 thyroid screen, which require no fasting. On June 28, a $5 oral cancer screen will be offered. More information and appointments are at 708-598-2441.

Annual Garden Walk planned in Oak Lawn

The Oak Lawn Garden Club presents its annual Garden Walk from 1 to 5 p.m. June 28. The event includes tours of five Oak Lawn gardens as well as refreshments and a raffle to win a deluxe garden basket. Oak Forest seeking residents for Citizens Police Academy

The Oak Forest Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizens Police Academy, a 12-week program designed to provide residents a working knowledge of law enforcement and police department operations. The program is free of charge and is limited to 25 students. The class will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. Mondays at the police department from Sept. 11 through Nov. 27. Applications are available until Sept. 6 at the Oak Forest Police Department, 15440 Central Ave., or www.oak-forest.org. All applicants must be 18 or older.
