Heyward benched in favor of Coghlan
“Jason's bat has not been working like we would like it to work right now, so we're doing something different,” manager
“We're not giving up on (Heyward). … But just for (Tuesday), we'll run C.C. out there and see if we can get more offense out of that position.”
Maddon planned to talk to Heyward, who signed an eight-year, $184 million contract in December, before Game 1.
Heyward, who batted .230 with seven home runs during the regular season and is 2-for-28 in the postseason, has been working with hitting coach
“You have to win four more games and we have to make our best guess right now,” Maddon said. “During the season, we gave him a (four-day) break (Aug. 18-21) also to get him back together. There are no games on the back side of this, so you want to win now.
“There's no time to give him time to get back in the groove like we were trying to do earlier this year. We'll play it out and see how it feels and looks.”
“You're working so hard, your goal is to get here and we have to get through the Giants and Dodgers to get here,” Maddon said. “The year before we attempted to go through the Pirates, Cardinals and Mets to get here. That's tough.
“And then you get here. Now there are no games to be played when this series is over, so let's go out there and play. They'll do the same thing, but I anticipate our guys to not be overwhelmed by it and be in a good mental place.”
