A multi-vehicle crash I-75 in Independence Township on Tuesday left one driver dead and another injured, officials said.
According to Michigan State Police, just before the collision, which happened near Sashabaw Road, traffic was at a standstill while an Oakland County road commission crew blocked the left two lanes. The right lane was still open, and that’s where a charter bus — driven by a 65-year-old Flint man — failed to stop and struck a red Chevrolet Silverado, causing a chain-reaction crash.
The Silverado was pushed into a Mercedes-Benz, which was then pushed into a Ford F-750. The Ford was pushed into a silver Chevrolet Silverado, police said.
The charter bus then hit the side of a truck-trailer parked on the right shoulder, police said.
The driver of the red Chevrolet, a 67-year-old man from Goodrich, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes was transported to an area hospital with a lower body injury, police said.
No other injuries were reported.
The freeway was shut down for the investigation — which included drones to map the scene, police said. Once the investigation is complete it will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.
“When driving, it’s very important to leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one in front of you,” MSP Lt. Mike Shaw stated on X. “This includes when waiting in stopped traffic to prevent large chain-reaction crashes.”
