FRISCO, Texas >> Jordyn Tyson didn’t spend much time at Colorado, but it was a year he won’t forget.

The former Buffaloes receiver is happy, however, as he has become a star for Arizona State.

Tyson was one of six players representing ASU on the first day of Big 12 media days Tuesday at The Star.

“A lot of good (memories),” he said of his one season at CU, in 2022. “I loved the people that was there; made a lot of memories, a lot of friends that I still talk to, to this day.”

As a true freshman in 2022, Tyson was one of the few bright spots for a CU team that finished 1-11, the lone victory being a 20-13 overtime win at California. That year, Tyson posted 22 catches for 470 yards in eight games before a season-ending knee injury.

After minimal playing time in the early part of that season, he busted loose with five catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, as well an 88-yard punt return for TD, against ASU on Oct. 29, 2002. The next week, he had five catches for 137 yards and a TD, but was injured late in the game.

“Definitely the Oregon game (sticks out), and definitely the ASU game,” he said. “But most importantly that Cal game when they rushed the field after we beat Cal on parent weekend. That was probably the best time I had.”

Following that season, CU hired Deion Sanders as head coach and Tyson transferred to ASU. He sat out the 2023 season while recovering from his knee injury but exploded last year with 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Big 12 champion Sun Devils.

Tyson has earned All-Big 12 honors and also some All-American recognition in the preseason.

“We’re so blessed to have Jordyn,” ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said. “His work ethic, his commitment to be great, and his talent level — it’s a really, really good combination. So, just to see him grow up in our program is pretty special.”

Tyson and ASU will visit CU on Nov. 22, and he said he’s looking forward to being at Folsom Field again. CU has a much different program now, but he said he’s focused on ASU.

“I have a lot of respect for Colorado because I did go there for a year, I did wear the uniform, I did run out with Ralphie,” he said. “So, I’ve definitely paid attention (the past two years), but I’m more worried about what’s going on at ASU.”

Hunter honored

Colorado’s Travis Hunter was named a recipient of the Big 12’s third annual Bob Bowlsby Award on Tuesday.

The award, named for the former Big12 commissioner, honors one male and one female student-athlete “who exemplify excellence and leadership both on and off the field.” The winners were determined by a vote of the league’s athletic directors.

BYU track and field star Meghan Hunter was also honored as the female recipient.

Travis Hunter, now with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, won the Heisman Trophy last year and was the consensus national player of the year. He won numerous other awards, engineering one of the most decorated individual seasons in college football history.

Change at BYU

Asked directly if quarterback Jake Retzlaff will be a part of the BYU program this year, head coach Kalani Sitake said he would let Retzlaff speak for himself. It has been reported, however, that the senior QB will be transferring after an off-the-field incident led to a dropped sexual assault charge and a violation of BYU’s honor code.

Retzlaff faces a seven-game suspension if he were to stay with the Cougars, so either way he won’t be on the field when BYU visits CU on Sept. 27 (8:15 p.m., ESPN). Three players are competing for the starting job.

“If you’re going to play at BYU, you have to be able to throw the ball,” Sitake said. “So, we have guys that can sling the ball, and they all have different skill sets. The fortunate part for me is I have a coaching staff that I was able to keep intact. … Let’s settle it on the field, let them compete and then I only know one way and I just play the best guys. That’s how it works.”

Notable

CU and seven other teams will take the stage Wednesday. Sanders is expected to be joined by quarterbacks Julian Lewis and Kaidon Salter, offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, cornerback DJ McKinney and kicker Alejandro Mata in representing the Buffs. … Arizona State won the Big 12’s inaugural Commissioner’s Cup for the 2024-25 academic year. The Commissioner’s Cup has a points system determined by a “combination of NCAA graduation success rate, Big 12 regular and postseason titles, plus on-campus programs offered that focus on community engagement, mental health and career development.”
