Liverpool needs one more win to secure the Premier League title after beating Leicester

MANCHESTER, England >> The Premier League title is so close Liverpool can almost touch it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s second-half strike in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Leicester on Sunday pushed the Merseyside club to within one more win of a record-equaling 20th English league crown.

It would not even require that if second-placed Arsenal loses to Crystal Palace on Wednesday. But regardless of any other result, Liverpool knows victory against Tottenham at Anfield next Sunday will be enough to seal the title.

“One win away now, it’s very close,” said Alexander-Arnold, who tore his jersey off in celebration after his decisive goal.

Arsenal had ensured Liverpool would have to wait a while longer for its crowning moment after routing Ipswich 4-0 earlier Sunday. And for long periods at the King Power Stadium, Leicester threatened to frustrate the league leader — even having a Conor Coady goal disallowed before Alexander-Arnold’s winner.

Former Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava announces he has committed to UCLA

LOS ANGELES >> Nico Iamaleava says he’s heading to UCLA, a week after Tennessee announced the quarterback who helped the Volunteers reach last season’s College Football Playoff was no longer with the program.

Iamaleava issued an Instagram post of himself in a UCLA uniform Sunday.

“My journey at UT has come to an end,” Iamaleava said in the post. “This decision was incredibly difficult, and truthfully, not something I expected to make this soon. But I trust God’s timing, and I believe He’s leading me where I need to be. Even though, this chapter is ending, a new chapter has begun and I am committed to UCLA!”

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel had indicated during the Volunteers’ spring game on April 12 that Iamaleava wouldn’t be part of the team anymore. Asked when Heupel knew the Vols would not have Iamaleava moving forward, the coach said it became apparent the previous morning when the quarterback was a “no show” with no communication with Heupel.

Skjelmose beats Pogacar in a photo finish to win Amstel Gold race

VALKENBURG, Netherlands >> Danish rider Mattias Skjelmose beat cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar by less than half a wheel’s length to win the Amstel Gold Race in a thrilling finish in the Netherlands on Sunday.

In a three-way sprint to the line, double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel appeared to have won but Pogacar nudged ahead of him with a couple of meters to go, only for Skjelmose to surge down the left and pip him at the line.

It was by far the biggest win of the 24-year-old’s career and he was in tears afterward when the photo finish showed him winning the Ardennes classic.

It was a rare defeat for the three-time Tour de France champion and multiple classics winner Pogacar, who was second at the prestigious Paris-Roubaix classic last weekend.

Pogacar, who won Amstel in 2023, launched one of his trademark attacks with about 40 kilometers (25 miles) to go in the 255.9-kilometer (158.7-mile) race. But he kept looking over his shoulder, and his lead was shredded to 15 seconds by Evenepoel and Skjelmose entering the last 20 kilometers.
