Two teenagers are facing charges for the reported carjacking of a Door Dash driver in Southfield that resulted in a high-speed police pursuit, officials said.
Derek Butler, 18, of Detroit and a 17-year-old juvenile defendant have been charged with carjacking and carrying a concealed weapon for the alleged April 12 incident. One of the teens is accused of threatening the victim with a firearm, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
The two teens are accused of stealing a 2023 Dodge Charger while the Door Dasher was making a delivery at The Lakes Aparments, near 12 Mile and Telegraph roads.
After police pursued the two at speeds topping 100 mph, the teens were arrested and the vehicle was recovered, the prosecutor’s office said. A firearm was reportedly found in the car’s center console.
“Carjackings are more than just a property crime, they traumatize victims and endanger our communities,” Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated in a news release. “The victim was simply doing his job. Violent crime will never be tolerated, and we will hold these defendants accountable.”
The prosecutor’s office declined to provide specifics on which road or roads the police pursuit occurred, as well as information on the alleged victim. The Oakland Press has reached out to the Southfield Police Department for further information and will update this story as details become available.
The alleged carjacking comes just a few weeks after another major crime-related incident involving a Door Dash delivery driver was reported in Oakland County. On March 9, a Door Dash driver was fatally shot in Ferndale — believed to be a road rage altercation turned deadly.
Mamadou Diallo, 26, was killed near Woodward Avenue just north of Eight Mile Road. Terrell Simms, 39, of Oak Park is accused in the slaying.
