Eli Solem allowed four hits and worked into the seventh inning to lead the Tam High baseball team to a 4-0 victory against University in the North Coast Section Division II playoffs on Wednesday.

Solem pitched 6.1 innings and had seven strikeouts against two walks at Paul Goode Field in San Francisco. Jackson Van Til faced the last two batters, retired both on strikeouts to close the game out.

The No. 6 Red-tailed Hawks advance to the quarterfinals and face host No. 3 San Marin (17-10) at 1 p.m. Saturday in a matchup between the MCAL’s top two regular-season teams.

Tam began the game with three consecutive singles by Tito Fierstein, Will Gensler, and Henry Stoll to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Gensler later came around to score on an error by No. 11 University (23-2) — which came into the game on an 18-game winning streak.

Anthony Murphy hit a single in the bottom of the fourth to push Tam’s lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Tam capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice bunt by Fierstein.

• Tyler Keehn drove in five runs as No. 3 San Marin made quick work of No. 14 Novato, posting a 12-0 victory in five innings in the D-II playoffs on Tuesday. Sean McGrath (three hits, two RBIs) and Hunter Uriarte (two hits, three RBIs) also had big days at the plate for San Marin. McGrath pitched five innings, allowing three hits against five strikeouts. • Tomales, the No. 14 seed in D-VI, battled into extra innings before falling to No. 3 Sonoma Academy 10-9 at Doyle Park in Santa Rosa on Wednesday. Tomales (10-10) allowed five runs in the bottom of the second but scored five in the top of the third to tie the game at 5-5. Tomales moved in front 8-5 in the fifth but Sonoma Academy (14-5) tied it in the bottom of the frame. Stran Stevens had two hits and two RBIs for Tomales. Jorge Lopez also had two hits.

Prep softball

Marin Catholic battled Petaluma through five innings but a three-run rally by the Trojans in the sixth proved decisive as MC fell 5-3 in the D-II playoffs. Morgan Carlson reached base three times (a single, two walks) and scored twice. Anna Held had two hits and drove in two runs. • No. 10 seed San Domenico (10-8) was eliminated in the first round of the D-VI playoffs following a 9-1 loss to No. 7 Hoopa Valley (10-16) on Wednesday.

Boys volleyball

Beckett Shewey had 40 kills and five blocks as Redwood’s foray into the NorCal Division III playoffs ended at the quarterfinal stage following a 25-16, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 12-15 loss to No. 3 Monta Vista on Tuesday.

“Beckett had another outstanding hitting night as usual,” coach Ben Wang said via email. “Evan (Wang) had a solid hitting night too. Jack (Alley) and Evan were money on serve receive and fantastic digging and defense again. Gavin (Atherton) came in as a defensive specialist and contributed his strong defense, too. We played our game and just fell a little short and ran out of runway after falling behind early in the fifth.”
