The season is over for the Colorado men’s basketball team.

For real this time.

The Buffaloes’ journey through an unexpected postseason berth proved to be a short one, as Villanova ended CU’s campaign by handing the Buffs an 85-64 defeat Tuesday night in the first round of the College Basketball Crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

CU finishes the season at 14-21.

It was a surprise postseason for the Buffs, who still posted the eighth 20-loss season in program history despite putting together a 5-5 stretch that culminated with CU’s loss against Houston in the Big 12 quarterfinals more than two weeks ago.

Villanova quickly exposed all the weaknesses that made it a tough season for the Buffs.

Andrej Jakimovski scored the game’s first bucket for the Buffs, but that proved to be CU’s only lead of the game.

Villanova took command with an 11-0 run in the first half, and the Wildcats kept padding the lead until they took a 45-30 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats buried CU with a 16-2 run in the second half, eventually building the lead to 29 points before cruising to the win.

It was a rough night in all facets for the Buffs, who shot .397 while Villanova put up a .532 mark.

Eric Dixon became Villanova’s all-time leading scorer, going 8-for-13 with 22 points, while Miami transfer Wooga Poplar torched the Buffs, going 11-for-17 with 24 points.

CU committed eight of its 13 turnovers in the first half, with Villanova finishing with a 16-5 edge in points off turnovers.

Buffs center Elijah Malone put an exclamation point on his solid finish to the season, with the former NAIA All-American posting his first Division I double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Malone also recorded a season-high four assists.

Malone finished 7-for-10 from the field, but he was the only CU player who turned in a plus night offensively. The rest of the Buffs finished 18-for-53 (.340).

CU outrebounded Villanova, 37-34, but shot just .280 on 3-pointers (7-for-25) and .538 at the free-throw line (7-for-13).

Head coach Tad Boyle leaned heavily on the players expected to return next season and started four of them in the 18th starting combo utilized this season — Malone, RJ Smith, Bangot Dak and freshman Felix Kossaras, who made the first start of his career.

The starting lineup was rounded out by Jakimovski, who finished with four points and eight rebounds in his final collegiate game.
