At age 19, Downes wins second Massachusetts Amateur title
Ryan Downes got off to an awful start at the 117th Massachusetts Amateur Championship.
He ended it as the champion.
The 19-year-old Longmeadow resident captured the championship for the second time in three years. The GreatHorse member ruled his home course in Hampden and easily defeated Patrick Kilcoyne of Woodland Golf Club in the final, 7 and 6.
Downes opened the tournament Monday and struggled to a 77. A 70 on the second and final day of stroke play enabled him to sneak up into a tie for 15th. Once match play began, Downes was unbeatable, topping two opponents Wednesday and Thursday and Kilcoyne on Friday.
In the championship match, Downes came out firing, winning the first two holes. He captured a 6-up lead after 14 holes and Kilcoyne was down five holes after the first 18 holes. Downes shot 67 in the morning compared to Kilcoyne’s 73.
The second 18 was owned by Downes as well. He won the opening hole to go 6-up again and was never threatened. The Vanderbilt University golfer adds to his growing trophy case.
He’s the first player in event history to win multiple titles before age 20. He captured the 2023 championship at Essex CC.

Boxer Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis arrested in South Florida on domestic violence charge
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. >> Professional boxer Gervonta “Tank” Davis was arrested early Friday morning in South Florida on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.
Davis, 30, was picked up shortly after midnight near the popular Lincoln Road area of Miami Beach, officials said.
The charge was connected to an incident that occurred last month in Doral, a residential city in western Miami-Dade, Miami Beach police spokesperson Christopher Bess said. Davis and his vehicle information had been added to a law enforcement database, and a license plate reader set up in Miami Beach flagged his car.
Miami Beach police made the initial stop and then turned Davis over to Doral police, Bess said.
Davis was being held on $10,000 bail. Jail and court records didn’t list an attorney for Davis. His promoter didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Chris Gotterup pounds his way to a 61 and leads the Scottish Open
NORTH BERWICK, Scotland >> The hardest task for Chris Gotterup was waking up Friday. Once he got going, he never really stopped until he tied the course record with a 9-under 61 and wound up with a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the Scottish Open.
Gotterup rolled in three long putts and was long as ever off the tee, seizing on a spectacular day of sunshine and very little wind in the morning at The Renaissance Club.
Harry Hall (64) was two shots behind, and a refreshed Ludvig Aberg (65) led a group that was three shots back.
Aberg is coming off just the break he needed — a trip home to Sweden for the first time in a year, a chance to see friends and eat his mother’s special sausage and get refreshed.
