As Bishop O’Dowd celebrated its North Coast Section Division II championship behind the closed doors of the locker room, there was a primal team scream reaching the outside world that could only be generated by teenage girls.

Makes sense. The Dragons, 71-53 winners over Moreau Catholic at Dublin High on Saturday night in Dublin, had been pointing toward the D-II championship all season.

A few moments later, there was another team scream of equal intensity. O’Dowd coach Malik McCord explained afterward what the ruckus was about.

“They always ask for their grade,” McCord said. “I hadn’t given them anything above a C all season and tonight I gave them a B-minus and they lost it. They’re a great group of kids.”

The dominant player was Savannah Jones, a 5-foot-4 junior who considers herself a facilitator but led all scorers with 25 points. Jones is the steadying figure on a team that started three freshmen. Two of those freshmen were also in double figures — Lizzy Quinteros with 13 points and Devin Cosgriff with 11.

“It was about trusting my teammates to have my back, and have theirs, and to keep our composure all the way around,” Jones said. “It’s my job to lead them, help them grow so they can be where I’m at and lead future teams.”

The Mariners, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, scrambled to within 47-41 with 6:11 to play before O’Dowd reasserted itself and closed out the game.

Madison Thomas led Moreau with 23 points.

Division I girls

Monte Vista 66, Granada 39 >> Two weeks after edging Granada by a point, Monte Vista picked a good time to raise its game. With a second straight title on the line, the Mustangs held Granada to nine points in the first quarter, three in the second, and headed to the fourth quarter with a 47-19 lead.

“Basically our defense was much tighter in this game,” coach Steve Cornell said. “I give my hat off to Granada. They’re a good team. But our defense had a little bit more speed than the last time we faced them.”

Monte Vista had three players score in double figures: Nia Coleman (17), Sarina Nagra (16) and Mahi Jariwala (16).

Division IV girls

Piedmont 75, Branson 49 >> As other elite teams in the NCS spent the section playoffs slugging it out in high-stakes Open Division playoff matchups, the best team during the regular season was confined to Division IV.

The Highlanders, despite wins over Salesian and Mitty, were ineligible to play in the NCS Open Division. The section picks its Open teams only from Divisions I through III.

Piedmont (27-0) did what an elite team does against competition that’s not at its level: it dominated. The top-seeded Highlanders wrapped up their first Division IV title since 2006 by throttling Branson on Saturday.

Junior guard Natalia Martinez led the team with 20 points and six assists. San Diego State commit Trinity Zamora poured in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and backcourt tandem Perseas Gioukaris and Maddie Hill combined for 23 points and eight rebounds.

Division V boys

Urban-San Francisco 52, Head-Royce 45 >> Head-Royce (27-4) couldn’t cap off its playoff run with an NCS Divison V championship.

Sophomore Andre Igoudala scored 16 points and made four 3-pointers and junior Marcel Pierre-Louis scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the the loss snapped Head-Royce’s six-game winning streak.
