Gary was a deep part of their lives and theirs’ his. We are so grateful for their care.
Gary loved the art world (he fulfilled his dream to present in a show), nature (hiking or biking), travel (Paris/Athens-Mykonos), the city of Santa Cruz, CA, and cafes everywhere. A favorite pastime was reading the local papers and/or the NY Times in coffee shops or libraries.
He loved to discuss ideas with others whether he knew the person or not. Carl Jung was favorite author.
He loved reading and discussing the Bible. He was well read.
Our memories include his style, good humor, attractiveness, a talent for learning and speaking new languages, open welcoming spirit, and emotional intelligence.
He worked various jobs in many cities. He was a book seller, barista, an adept waiter and experienced in commercial kitchens. He volunteered at a church outreach in the kitchen to feed the unhoused. His last known employment was as a tree trimmer with a landscape co.
His friends are as remarkable as him and of highest character and kindness. One wrote to us, that he, “…is devasted by his loss. Gary was one of the most influential, kindest, and most important people of my life. He left his mark on this world and will be greatly missed.” Another wrote, “…he is now in pure love.”
Gary succumbed to the family disease of addiction. The family knew it was never a lack of love, but of illness.
During periods of health, his empathy, born of experience, guided others to recovery. The family attributes its health to these Twelve Step fellowships; AA, Narcotics Anonymous, and Nar-Anon Family Groups. He thoroughly loved life, his family, and friends. His friends and family loved and laughed with him alot. We will all miss him deeply.
Services pending. The family suggests donating in Gary’s name to; MHCAN.org, (donate button at top of page) and/or stpaulswc.org, (give button at bottom of page).
