Freshman forward Gabby Brooks made two 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points, and the Cabrillo College women’s basketball team beat Mission 63-56 in the teams’ Coast Conference South Division game in Aptos on Wednesday.

Freshman guard Sydney Chesnut made four 3s and finished with 16 points for the Seahawks (14-6, 3-0), who led 34-27 lead at the half. Sophomore forward Renee Parker scored 11 points, and sophomore guard Jade Crum scored nine points.

Loli Montesino, a sophomore guard out of Watsonville who received all-conference first-team honors last season, made three 3-pointers and scored 16 points for the Saints (11-10, 2-1). Sophomore guard Ciana Mayorquin made two 3s and scored 10 points.

Cabrillo plays at San Jose City (19-2, 3-0) for sole possession of the division lead on Friday at 5 p.m.

Men’s basketball

West Valley 78, at Cabrillo 63 >> The Seahawks’ first loss in Coast Conference South Division play came at the hands of the defending state champion on Wednesday.

Freshman guard Walzel Evans made three 3-pointers and scored 24 points for the Seahawks, who trailed 34-27 at the half. Freshman forward Dai’shaun Buie added 11 points.

“Self inflicted wounds hurt tonight, can’t give them 2nd chance opportunities, can’t turn it over or take bad shots and we did that from time to time and like all good teams, they make you pay,” Seahawks coach James Page said. “Loved the fight and effort from the guys, Walzel Evans continues to prove to be one of the best point guards in NorCal. He kept us in it all night.”

Sophomore guard Robel Zemmo made five 3s and scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half, as West Valley (17-3, 4-0) earned its fifth straight win since falling to San Francisco on Dec. 21. Sophomore guard Jake Davis made two 3s and scored 20 points.

Cabrillo (11-9, 3-1) plays at San Jose City (16-4, 4-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Surfing

SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach >> Santa Cruz’s Kaikora Nauenberg tied for 25th place overall and earned 400 points at the World Surf League’s SLO CAL Open at Pismo Beach, a Qualifying Series 3,000-point event, on Thursday.

Nauenberg produced a two-wave total score of 7.16 in Heat 2 of the Round of 32, which lasted 20 minutes. She finished behind Lanea Mons (10.16) of Atlantic Beach, Florida, and Kylie Pulcini (11.90) of Melbourne, Florida, both of whom advanced, and Laguna Beach’s Scout Mitchell (7.90), who was eliminated.

Two Santa Cruzans remain in the men’s competition. In the Round of 32, Sam Coffey goes in Heat 4 and John Mel goes in Heat 5.

Girls basketball

At Watsonville 65, Monterey 35 >> Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 19 points and six steals, to help the Wildcatz overcome a slow start and win their Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division game Wednesday.

Wildcatz (14-3, 4-1) held a 22-21 lead at the half. They have a half game lead in the division since Salinas (9-7, 3-1) lost to defending division co-champion Hollister (9-7, 3-2) on Wednesday.

Junior Stephanie Martinez had 18 points, six steals, and four rebounds for the Wildcatz, and senior Fernanda Lazo had 10 points and three rebounds.

Jeanine Williams scored 17 points to lead the Toreadores (4-8, 1-4).

Watsonville plays at defending division co-champion Alisal (10-5, 2-2) in Salinas on Friday at 7 p.m.

St. Francis 59, at Santa Catalina 15 >> Freshman guard Liliana Whitmeyer had game-high 21 points, six assists, three rebounds, and two steals, and the Sharks won their PCAL Cypress Division game Wednesday.

Freshman Abby Bedolla scored 12 points for the Sharks (13-2, 6-0), and sophomore guard Maya Calfee had 11 points, 11 steals, nine assists, six rebounds, and two blocks. Freshman Keira Giro and junior Maeve Flynn each chipped in with six points.

The Sharks play at Pacific Collegiate (8-6, 4-2) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

PCS 49, Greenfield 39 >> Sophomore forward Kat Buckley had 22 points and nine rebounds, and the Pumas won their PCAL Cypress Division game Wednesday.

Buckley has been an offensive force over the past four games, scoring a collective 95 points.

Junior guard Julia Guth had 12 points, seven assists, and six steals for PCS. Sophomore guard Nina Gramkowski had eight points and three steals, and senior guard Addie Payne added six points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks.

PCS (8-6, 4-2) hosts St. Francis (13-2, 6-0) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Carmel 33, at MVC 30 >> Senior Sophia Cortes scored 12 points, but the Mustangs coughed up the lead in the second half of their PCAL Mission Division loss Wednesday.

Senior Amya Tellez scored seven points for the Mustangs, who led 16-6 at the half.

MVC plays at Pacific Grove (11-4, 4-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.

At King City 46, Pajaro Valley 16 >> The Grizzlies were outscored 28-4 in the second half of their PCAL Cypress Division loss Wednesday.

Elizabeth Zamora scored nine points to lead the Grizzlies (4-11, 2-4). Teammate Olivia Contreras, Pajaro Valley’s leading scorer this season, was held to two points.

Crystal Paramo scored eight points to pace the Mustangs (5-11, 4-2).

Pajaro Valley hosts Palma (12-2, 4-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys soccer

Harbor 3, at Soquel 2 >> Danny Garcia scored the decisive goal on a rebound off a shot from Alex Aparicio, and the Pirates won their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League road match Wednesday.

Aparicio finished with a goal and an assist, and Jair Martinez also scored for Harbor.

Goalie Damian Escalante made four saves for the Pirates (10-1-1, 2-0-0), who host Aptos (6-4-1, 1-1-0) on Friday at 4 p.m.

Santa Cruz 2, at Aptos 1 >> Desmond Boutelle and Stefan Ciesiolkiewicz, both junior strikers, each had a goal and an assist in the second half of the Cardinals’ SCCAL win Wednesday.

Aptos took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, when Haziel Parra finished off a pass from Josiah Siqueiros.

Boutelle knotted the score in the 55th minute, and Ciesiolkiewicz produced the decisive goal in the 65th minute.

Goalie Stephen Yee made eight saves for the Cardinals (7-4-1, 1-0-1), who host SLV (3-3-2, 1-1-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Noah Curran had three saves for the Mariners (6-4-1, 1-1-0), who play at Harbor (10-1-1, 2-0-0) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

At SLV 2, Scotts Valley 0 >> Senior forward Evan Hiatt scored twice in the Cougars’ SCCAL win Wednesday.

Senior midfielder Ryan Baker assisted one of the goals.

Goalie Seamus Drees made seven saves for the Falcons. Keenan Buntz made one save for the Cougars.

On Friday, Scotts Valley hosts Soquel at 3:30 p.m., and SLV (3-3-2, 1-1-0) plays at Santa Cruz (7-4-1, 1-0-1) at 7 p.m.

Carmel 5, at MVC 0 >> The Mustangs were unable to finish off any of their six corner kicks in their PCAL Cypress Division loss Wednesday.

Goalie Matteo Montenegro made seven saves for the Mustangs (3-7-3, 0-4-1), who play at North Monterey County (3-8-1, 1-2-1) on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

Girls soccer

At Carmel 3, MVC 0 >> The Mustangs had six shots on goal, but were unable to find the finishing touch in their PCAL Mission Division loss Wednesday.

Freshman goalie Charlotte Groves started and made five saves for MVC. Sophomore Chloe Morrow replaced Groves and made three saves.

MVC (3-6-3, 1-3-1) hosts NMC (9-2-1, 2-1-1) on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

At Alisal 1, PCS 0 >> Goalie Hailey Woelfel made five saves in the Pumas’ PCAL Mission Division road loss Wednesday.

PCS put nine of their 20-plus shots on goal, hit the crossbar four times and missed a wide-open chance.

The Trojans produced the decisive goal in the 63rd minute.

PCS hosts Carmel at Cabrillo College on Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

At Greenfield 57, PCS 50 >> Ian Bulfin had 21 points and 12 rebounds in the Pumas’ PCAL Cypress Division loss Wednesday.

PCS trailed 36-25 at halftime, and rallied to pull within four points with a minute left, but the Pumas missed a couple of shots, fouled, and the Bruins made their free throws.

Thomas May and Garrett Koontz each scored 10 points for the Pumas (2-9, 0-5), who host St. Francis (14-3, 5-0) on Friday at 7 p.m.
