It’s been a rough week in Boulder, the kind where scrolling the news makes your stomach drop. But if you’re looking for a little relief, maybe some rhythm and sunshine, good news: Summer concert season is here.

If there’s one thing Boulder County consistently gets right, it’s live music in pretty places. Whether you’re winding up a dirt road to hear banjos echo through a century-old mountain inn, or dancing on the Pearl Street bricks with a plastic cup of something cold in hand, these shows are here to make things feel just a little lighter, even if only for a night.

If you’re in the mood for mountain air and mandolins, start with the Gold Hill Inn, where the road up feels like a slow slide back in time. One minute you’re (safely) passing cyclists in North Boulder, and the next you’re winding through Left Hand Canyon, watching pavement turn to dirt and the forest begin to press in on both sides. At the top of the hill, nestled in a tiny former mining town with more pine trees than people, sits one of the Front Range’s best-kept not-so-secrets.

Built in 1924 and run by the same family for over six decades, the Gold Hill Inn is part restaurant, part music venue, part time capsule. Inside, the walls are lined with cast iron pans and antique snowshoes, and the wooden beams glow under the soft light of hanging lanterns. It’s the kind of place where a band like Elephant Revival might play their first gig (they did), or where you might catch Gregory Alan Isakov.

In recent years, the outdoor Beer Garden, which was born of pandemic-era improvisation, has become its own summer staple, with casual a la carte dining and a front-row seat to some of the best pickin’ and pluckin’ this side of the Divide.

This summer’s lineup includes acts like the Jake Leg, Foggy Memory Boys, and, on Friday, June 27, local Americana darlings Wood Belly, who are no strangers to the Gold Hill, take the stage.

“We’ve been playing at Gold Hill for a long time and we always love coming back,” said Aaron McCloskey of Wood Belly. “Brian (Finn) has created such an amazing vibe there and it’s one of our absolute favorite venues. The energy in that room is tough to beat.”

Known for tight harmonies, heartfelt songwriting and a sound that lives somewhere between traditional bluegrass and modern alt-country, Wood Belly blends soulful ballads with boot-stomping jams. And, in a couple of weeks, they’ll be bringing a little of both.

“We have a handful of new songs that we’ll be playing at the show,” McCloskey said, “along with a lot of material from our first album, “Solid Ground.” We’ve recently revisited a lot of that old material and they’re always fan favorites.”

For newcomers to the Wood Belly experience, expect more than tight musicianship — this is a band that moves, breathes, and plays as one well-oiled musical machine.

“Someone coming to a Wood Belly show for the first time can expect a group of musicians who play as one,” McCloskey said. “We’ll play an upbeat and high-energy show at Gold Hill with a handful of more thoughtful and mellow songs mixed in. People should expect a super-fun atmosphere and a really high-level band.”

What to know >> Parking is limited, so carpooling with your crew is the move. Cover is usually cash-only (Wood Belly’s show is $20), and there’s a full bar with tons of whiskey choices and a delicious in-house cherry-infused vodka, so maybe assign a designated driver.

If Gold Hill is a backwoods escape with a banjo soundtrack, Bands on the Bricks is pure Boulder: Barefoot toddlers, seniors in sequins, someone in the crowd with a bubble-blowing machine and a lot of mid-week dancing under fairy lights.

Every Wednesday from June 11 through July 30, Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall transforms into a free, open-air concert venue, complete with a margarita garden, local beer and the kind of chaotic community spirit that can only come from bumping into five people you haven’t seen since the last concert season. It’s Boulder’s summer heartbeat, and honestly, if you haven’t been, it’s time.

This year’s series kicks off June 11 with Graham Good & The Painters, a genre-bending group with a cult following and a sound that lands somewhere between funk, folk, rock and radiant sunshine. The group has opened for acts like Caamp and Andy Frasco, played Red Rocks, and now they’re bringing their high-voltage charm to the bricks.

“We are excited to bring our flavor of feel-good, funk-rock-folk music to downtown Boulder and light up downtown with some hope and joy,” said frontman Graham Good. “Fans can expect a good mix of our tasty originals and some classic covers. Expect to dance and smile with us.”

Good calls the genre “feel-good music,” which is reflective of the band’s whole philosophy.

“Our music fits into a community concert, like Bands on the Bricks, by inviting people to let go of their worries and allowing them to let the music carry them towards the best version of themselves.”

Sets are upbeat, big-hearted and highly contagious in the best way.

“Our favorite part of playing outdoor summer shows like this is bringing the community together to celebrate and experience joy,” Good said.

What to know >> Bands on the Bricks concerts are free, walkable and as Uber/Lyft-friendly as downtown Boulder gets. The beer, wine and margarita garden opens at 5:30 p.m. (hot tip: happy hour lasts till 6:30), with music starting at 6 p.m. and headliners taking the stage at 7 p.m. After the show, keep the party going at Velvet Elk Lounge for the official afterparty, which features DJ sets, good cocktails and no cover charge.

If you’re trying to catch a show somewhere else along the Front Range, don’t worry, you have a ton of options. This is your guide to the best outdoor concerts happening around Boulder and Broomfield counties this summer. Because let’s face it: Summer here is short, and those warm nights aren’t going to celebrate themselves.
