Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Oneil Cruz, known more for delivering hard-hit homers than producing them in quantity, was added Tuesday to next week’s Home Run Derby in Atlanta.
He is the fifth player named as a participant in Monday’s event at Truist Park, which hosts the All-Star Game a night later. Also competing are Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., Minnesota’s Byron Buxton, Seattle’s Cal Raleigh and Washington’s James Wood.
Cruz, 26, had 15 homers entering Tuesday night’s game at Kansas City. He hit a career-best 21 last season.
When the 6-foot-7 Cruz hits a homer, he often hits it hard. On May 25 against visiting Milwaukee, he hit a ball measured at 122.9 mph into the Allegheny River, the highest exit velocity on a home run since Statcast began tracking in 2015.
Yankees moving Chisholm back to 2B
All-Star infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is moving back to second base with the New York Yankees in place of DJ LeMahieu, who is heading to the bench.
Chisholm has been playing third base, but he’s made some wayward throws lately while hampered by a sore shoulder, and the Yankees have struggled on defense at times.
He was back at second for Tuesday night’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners, with Oswald Peraza starting at third.
Mets place Marte on IL with bruised right knee
The New York Mets placed Starling Marte on the 10-day injured list with a bruised right knee on Tuesday and activated Jesse Winker, who missed two months with an oblique injury.
Marte had seven hits in his last three games, including three on Sunday as the starting left fielder against the Yankees. The 36-year-old is batting .270 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 58 games.
The Mets hope to have Marte back after the All-Star break.
Winker, activated from the 60-day injured list, last played on May 4. The left fielder is batting .239 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 24 games.
Dodgers call up former Reds closer Diaz
Alexis Díaz is back in the major leagues and ready to make his debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who acquired the 2023 All-Star reliever from the Cincinnati Reds over a month ago.
The 28-year-old Díaz came to the Dodgers in a May 29 trade that sent minor league pitcher Mike Villani to the Reds. He had been with Triple-A Oklahoma City ever since, going 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in six appearances.
Moncada back with Angels after IL stint
The Los Angeles Angels activated third baseman Yoán Moncada off the IL after five weeks away because of right knee inflammation.
The switch-hitting Moncada, 30, was batting .237 with an .841 OPS, six homers, six doubles and 19 RBIs in 30 games when he went on the injured list on June 2.
Moncada is also one of the team’s more disciplined hitters, with 32 strikeouts and 13 walks in 113 plate appearances.
Brewers coach having prostate surgery
Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Al LeBoeuf is away from the team after having prostate surgery.
The Brewers said that LeBoeuf is expected to rejoin the team without providing a specific timetable. He had the operation on Monday.
LeBoeuf was diagnosed in July 12 with a form of blood cancer in his right hip, though he was declared cancer-free the following year.
The condition was traced to when he was hit on the hip by a pitch while playing for Triple-A Portland in 1985, resulting in a deep bone bruise.
