DETROIT >> The Tigers are finalizing a deal to bring aboard Shane Farrell as farm director.

The potential deal was first reported Saturday by the Canadian Baseball Network and confirmed by a source familiar with the deal. It is expected to be finalized early next week.

Farrell, 35, the son of former Tigers pitcher and Blue Jays manager John Farrell, has been the Blue Jays director of amateur scouting the last five years. He previously worked in the Cubs organization with both Tigers president Scott Harris and general manager Jeff Greenberg.

A vacancy in the Tigers’ player development department was created last season when Ryan Garko, still the VP of player development, took on the added title of assistant general manager.

Farrell, hired in the role of farm director, would presumably assume some of Garko’s previous player development duties.

Dan Lunetta, who has held the title of farm director, is still operating as usual out of Lakeland.
