SAN JOSE >> Senior running back Fausto Gonzales gained 204 yards on offense and scored a pair of touchdowns, and the Harbor High football team beat host Yerba Buena 27-18 in nonleague action Thursday night.

Gonzales finished with 173 yards rushing and 31 receiving. He and fellow senior running backs David Quintanilla and Nico Edler combined for 257 yards rushing.

The contest was originally slated to take place Friday, but it was moved up a day due to the shortage of game officials in the area.

“I’m really proud of our guys for how they fought and battled tonight,” said James Gaynor Jr., the Pirates’ head coach. “We were down seven starters and the biggest challenge was the mental aspect with it being a short week and their heavy motion passing offense. It was a great team win and we’re looking forward to reviewing the film and getting better next week.”

Quarterbacks Luke Griffin and Andres Mendoza each saw action for the Pirates. Griffin had a 4-yard rushing touchdown, and Mendoza threw a touchdown pass to junior receiver Jacob Williams.

Senior defensive back Jack Espinoza had an interception, sack and a forced fumble. Safety Israel Lopez-Lopez had six tackles and two pass breakups. Senior linebacker Johan Perez made nine tackles.

Harbor (1-1) returns to action Sept. 19, when it hosts St. Francis in its final nonleague game at 7:30 p.m.
