Residents can learn more about migratory birds
Residents can help migratory bird populations by getting involved in the Boulder County campaign, “Shared Spaces: Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities,” according to a county press release.
It’s peak bird migration season in Colorado, but the bird populations are in steady decline, possibly because of light pollution, according to recent studies.
Boulder County volunteers will offer an in-person learning event for residents to learn more about what they can do to protect wild birds and wild spaces in the county. The event is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat, 3893 N. 75th St.
LONGMONT
Girl Scouts collect items for children at shelter
Girl Scout Troop 77038 in Longmont is holding a donation drive to gather materials for children staying at Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley, a place for families leaving domestic violence situations.
The troop plans to collect and provide unused school supplies and hygiene products for young people as part of its Bronze Award project, a community outreach venture for second-year junior scouts, according to troop leaders.
“What we found when talking to St. Vrain Safe Shelter is that when kids leave their home environment, the last thing that they do is grab their backpack, or rather, they never grab their backpack,” said Annika Franz, a troop leader. “They said that new school supplies would be such a big help.”
The donation drive will run from through May 30, during which the public can drop off their contributions at a designated collection point inside Longmont Public Library at 409 Fourth Ave.
The shelter’s mission is to offer support and resources to individuals and families affected by domestic and gender-based violence, Franz said. The shelter also helps young people affected by dating violence and people affected by human trafficking.
