A Lafayette man has been arrested and charged after reportedly sending sexually explicit material of a child to a decoy.
Micah Lee Rutland, 37, is charged with child sex exploitation — possession with intent to distribute — extraordinary risk; child sex exploitation — possession — extraordinary risk; and possession of a controlled substance.
He is currently in custody on a $50,000 bond and is awaiting his preliminary hearing on Jan. 16.
According to an affidavit, at 10:29 a.m. Dec. 23, a Boulder County detective received a call from an online nonprofit organization representative who informed her that Rutland had been engaging in illegal and inappropriate activities with minors.
The representative said the organization had been in communication with Rutland who admitted to having sexual relations with children under the age of 12 and sent child pornography to one of the organization’s decoys that showed a child, aged between 5 and 7 and an older girl, about 15, according to the affidavit. Rutland reportedly told the decoy he abused the child depicted.
The name of the organization was redacted in the affidavit.
The representative said all the material was stored on the decoy’s phone and the decoy had gotten Rutland’s name after he sent his Facebook information and his address was found through the organization’s “investigative resources.”In text messages exchanged between Rutland and the decoy, Rutland reportedly offered to send another photo of a child “tied up” but the decoy declined.
Deputies executed a search warrant and found .5 grams of presumptive methamphetamine in Rutland’s room.
During the search, Rutland’s phone was also seized on which deputies found more child pornography.
