Age 97, died 9/20/23 surrounded by her children. Inspired by the beauty of nature, Jean found every excuse to be outdoors. Her special place was Madeline Island where she enjoyed walks in the woods and the shimmering waters of Lake Superior.

An avid skier, skater, gardener, knitter of beautiful sweaters, and tennis player, Jean’s notable outdoor feats include earning first female ascents while mountain climbing as a young girl in the Canadian Rockies and sailing across the Atlantic in her adult years. Jean loved family gatherings and hearing stories about the lives of her family members. A lifelong St. Paul resident, alumna of Central High School and University of MN, Jean was committed to her community. She managed an apartment building for over 30 years and volunteered at Family Tree Clinic and as an ESL and reading tutor. Jean cherished her many life-long friendships and felt deep gratitude for the new friends she made at Montcalm Apartments and Episcopal Homes. Preceded in death by her former husband, Bartlett J. Baker, Sr, and her sisters Anne, Mary and Dornie. Survived by her children, Bartlett “Bake” Baker (Lee), Anne Parker (Bill), Sarah “Sally” Hussian (Tom); seven grandchildren, Henry, Louise, Ross, Amelia, Emma, Peter, Mark; four great grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. Curious, adventuresome, and compassionate, Jean lived a fulfilling life and faced life challenges with admirable strength.
