It was a deflating weekend reunion with a pair of former Pac-12 rivals for the Colorado women’s lacrosse team.
On Sunday, the 21st-ranked Buffaloes stumbled against No. 24 USC in a match played in Berkeley, Calif., with the Trojans handing CU a 15-6 defeat at California’s Memorial Stadium. Following Thursday’s season-opening loss at No. 15 Stanford, the Buffs finish the first week of the program’s 12th season at 0-2.
It wasn’t as good a start for CU as Thursday’s defeat, when the Buffs jumped to a 5-0 lead at Stanford before getting outscored 15-5 the rest of the way. Still, the Buffs were within 3-2 of USC late in the first quarter behind a pair of Maddie Shoup goals before the Trojans took control.
The second of Emma Bunting’s four goals, scored with 29 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, gave USC a 4-2 lead going into the second. USC scored the next five goals, including two more from Bunting, before Colorado College graduate transfer Kendall Havill tallied her first goal with the Buffs, cutting CU’s deficit to 9-3 at halftime.
USC, however, added the first two goals of the second half and six of the first eight, pushing its lead to 15-5 with less than 12 minutes remaining.
Havill, Shoup and Madeline Pisani scored two goals apiece for the Buffs, whose win against the Trojans at the Pac-12 tournament last spring ended a six-game losing streak against USC.
Buffs goalie Danielle Heintz finished with five saves. CU outshot USC 30-24 and posted a 14-9 advantage on draw controls, but the Trojans owned a 20-18 edge on shots on goal.
CU completes a season-opening run of three consecutive road games on Friday at Northwestern (6 p.m. MT).
