MONTEREY >> About 8,000 runners will flock to the streets of Monterey and Pacific Grove Sunday morning to take part in the 19th Monterey Bay Half Marathon.

The race begins at 7 a.m. near downtown Monterey, runs along Cannery Row and next to the Pacific Grove shoreline. The 13.1-mile course then turns around near Asilomar and returns, finishing near Custom House Plaza.

More than 6,500 people took part last year. Nico Montanez of Mammoth Lakes was the top finisher with a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes and 57 seconds. Kenyan Joyline Chemutai repeated as the woman’s champion, finishing in 1:10:21, just over 30 seconds faster than the year before.

The two-day event includes a 3k and 5k race on Saturday along Lovers Point, as well as a health and fitness expo from noon to 6 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Monterey Conference Center. About 2,500 runners are expected to compete in Saturday’s event.
