For wide receiver Courtland Sutton, Denver is home.

As Sutton saw his name floated around in trade rumors this offseason, he appreciated other teams valuing his skill-set, but said he is happy to remain with the Broncos.

“It’s flattering that other teams see me as a (player) that can come in and be the guy for them,” Sutton said after Broncos OTAs on Thursday. “I love that I’m here. This is where I ultimately want to be.”

During the league’s spring ownership meetings in March, head coach Sean Payton said a number of teams called about Sutton and fellow wideout Jerry Jeudy. But Denver stood pat and didn’t trade either before the NFL draft while opting to pick up Jeudy’s fifth-year option.

Still, the Broncos drafted Oklahoma wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. with their first pick in the second round, fueling speculation that Sutton’s days in Denver are nearing an end.

If Denver trades Sutton this summer, it would save $14.4 million while taking on a $3.8 million dead cap hit, according to Over the Cap. Sutton, who will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026, doesn’t have any guaranteed money in 2024 and 2025.

Unless the Broncos receive an offer they can’t refuse, letting the season play out with the current wide receiver depth might be the best option.

Sutton is still one of the team’s top weapons, totaling 64 catches for 829 receiving yards in 2022. He has not produced at the same level since tearing his ACL in 2020, but Sutton has shown durability, playing in 31 games over the past two seasons.

Sutton and the rest of the group could reap the benefits of having an offensive guru like Payton running the show. Similar to other players on the roster, Sutton had high praise for Payton’s attention to detail and being transparent in his expectations.

“I’ve been able to come here and continue to build the things we are aspiring to get to,” Sutton said. “Everybody has bought in and is ready to take this thing to the next level.”

In preparation for the upcoming season, Sutton said he received a cut-up of all Michael Thomas’ targets during the 2019 season, when the New Orleans Saints wideout set an NFL record with 149 receptions under Payton’s direction.

“(I’m) diving into it,” Sutton said. “How did (Thomas) (run) a route? Figuring out ways to get open (and) implement the things he did well into my game. I feel like we’re going to have a lot of success.”

Sutton believes the Broncos have a great receivers room, adding that the depth within the position group has brought out the best in every player. He’s glad to see veteran wideout Tim Patrick back on the field after missing the 2022 season due to a torn ACL. Sutton recalled watching Patrick inside the facility, rehabbing and working hard to get back healthy.

“Tim is always going to be a dog,” Sutton said. “He’s always going to be a guy who can go out there and make plays. It’s great having him in the meeting room and back on the field. You can hear him talking to the young guys as well. It’s nice to have another (veteran) presence in that room.”

Sutton said everyone is excited for a fresh start. For the past few years, he thinks the team hasn’t showcased their true potential with the talent on the roster. With Payton at the helm, every player wants to take advantage of the opportunity.

“We are rolling into the training camp with the mindset of we are going to be the best versions of ourselves so we can have success on Sundays,” he said.
