A grant of $4.55 million will go toward the rebuilding of 22 homes in West Altadena for low-income, underinsured and uninsured homeowners who lost their residences in the Eaton fire, San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity announced Friday.
The Altadena Builds Back Foundation, an initiative of the Pasadena Community Foundation, awarded the multimillion- dollar grant to the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. The rebuilding is planned to take place over the next three years.
“Pasadena Community Foundation and its supporting organization Altadena Builds Back Foundation believe that recovery must begin with — and be led by — our community,” Candice Kim, Altadena Builds Back Foundation project director, said. “This inaugural grant … embodies our deep, decades-long commitment to Altadena and our trust in SGV Habitat to deliver community-rooted solutions.”
According to the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, the average age of applicants for rebuilding after the Eaton fire are 72 years old, and have lived in their homes for more than three decades. Applicants also represent multigenerational families or seniors on fixed incomes.
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity said they heard from homeowners that they have a desire to rebuild their homes and stay in Altadena, but also need significant funding to supplement any insurance payout to be able to cover the high cost to rebuild.
“This is not just about rebuilding homes — it’s about restoring hope, stability and a future,” Bryan Wong, CEO of San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, said. “These homes represented generations of resilience and legacy. With this support, families can begin to rebuild more than walls — they will rebuild lives.”
