Mercedes Amalia Diaz (nee Ambros) was born in Havana, Cuba, on May 5, 1939, to her loving parents, Constantino and Isabel Ambros. She peacefully passed away in her home on September 26, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service.

Mercedes lives on through her cherished family: her brother George Ambros, her son Ramon Diaz (Mariana), her daughter Astrid Garcia, and her beloved grandchildren, Domenica, Gavin, Zien, and Mia.

From a young age, Mercedes was devoted to helping others. When political changes in Cuba prompted her to leave, she emigrated to embrace a new life in Los Angeles, California. There, she began working at the International Institute of LA, assisting refugees in finding housing and employment.

Eager to deepen her impact, Mercedes completed her studies at Mount St. Mary’s College, where she dedicated herself to social work. She became a key member of the Neighborhood Center in Santa Fe Springs, eventually becoming the Director of Social Services and was elected to the city council. Throughout her career, she balanced her commitment to her community with her love for her family.

Mercedes founded the Mercedes Diaz Homes Network, Inc., opening homes for adults with developmental disabilities.

For over 40 years, she nurtured the organization, believing in the worth of every individual.

Her passion for helping others shone in everything she did. Through her support, kind words, and generosity, she touched many lives and inspired those around her.

Mercedes’ mission was simple: to improve the lives of others. Her spirit of love and service will continue to inspire future generations.
