Resident of Mill Valley Judy Cooper passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, with her husband, brother, and sister-in-law at her side. Judy was born in Los Angeles to Dr. John and Fawn Rydalch Stratton in 1939, and grew up in Alhambra, later attending Whittier College where she formed enduring friendships, graduating in 1961. She began a career as an elementary school teacher, joining the Mill Valley School District in 1966.
Judy and her husband Stan Cooper were married in the seventies and settled in Mill Valley. Judy enjoyed a long, rewarding career in the Mill Valley School District, beginning as an elementary school teacher at Strawberry Point School, moving to the Middle School as a sixth-grade teacher when the Middle School opened, and then serving as Principal at Strawberry Point, Edna Maguire, and Park Schools, retiring in 1998.
Judy is survived by her husband Stan, her brother John Stratton (Carol), her honorary son Ben Lenail (Laurie Yoler), and grandson Alex Lenail. She is survived by nephew David Stratton ( Jacqueline) and nieces Stefani Stratton Bollé (Tim) and Danna Stratton (Greg), and their children. She was predeceased by nephew Greg Stratton and grandson Max Lenail. She will be missed greatly by Stan’s brothers and families, and the many friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives she touched.
Judy was a voracious reader, belonging to several book groups and forging deep friendships. With a great sense of adventure, she was an enthusiastic traveler. She loved the outdoors. Judy’s soft voice, the twinkle in her eye, and her joyful presence will remain with each of us.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation to Kiddo! (The Mill Valley Schools Community Foundation), where Judy once served on the Board of Directors; to the “Max Lenail Memorial Bridge Fund” (fund #7559 at the San Diego Foundation) honoring Judy’s grandson Max Lenail; or to The ALS Association in memory of Judy’s nephew Greg Stratton.
Family and friends are planning a remembrance of Judy at the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club on Friday, June 9, 2023, from 2 to 4 PM.
