The getaway driver in the 2023 beating and robbery of a Mahtomedi man who had just arrived home with $38,000 in casino winnings was sentenced Tuesday to two months in jail and three years of probation.

Deangelo Romaine Jacox, 35, of Coon Rapids, was the last of five defendants sentenced in Washington County District Court in the assault and robbery of the man, who was 67 years old at the time of the coordinated attack.

According to prosecutors, the man was tracked inside Treasure Island Resort & Casino and followed home in the early morning hours of Dec. 10, 2023. When he got out of his vehicle in his driveway, Shawn Eric Lewis Jr. and Tristin Tyler Jacox-Mann went after him.

While the victim was being punched and kicked, two women relatives came out of his house, according to the criminal complaints. The men threatened that they “were going to kill the girls,” and one pointed a gun at one of the women and said, “You (expletive) better go inside or we will kill you.”

After the attack and robbery, Jacox, Lewis Jr. and Jacox-Mann fled in a pickup truck.

Jacox pleaded guilty to fleeing police in a motor vehicle in October 2024 as part of a plea deal with the prosecution, which agreed to dismiss three other charges: aiding and abetting first- and second-degree aggravated robbery and aiding and abetting threats of violence.

Jacox also entered into a proffer agreement a month before his plea, sharing information about the incident with the prosecution.

“I believe he’s the first one of anybody to have accepted responsibility for his part in the overall scheme,” Jacox’s attorney, Frederick Goetz, told the court at sentencing. “And I believe his cooperation and his assistance has been substantial and instrumental in the resolution of all those other cases.”

But it also has resulted in “long-lasting blowback” for Jacox and his family dynamics, Goetz said.

Jacox and Jacox-Mann are related, according to prosecutors.

“As the court knows, there are family members in this case, and that has caused a real split amongst the family,” Goetz said. “Some think Deangelo did the right thing by stepping up and taking responsibility. There are other people who feel the exact opposite.”

Casino acquaintances

After the attack and robbery, the victim gave chase in his vehicle. He eventually pulled over and met with a sheriff’s deputy, while other law enforcement officers pursued and eventually stopped the suspects’ pickup truck near the intersection of Minnesota 36 and White Bear Avenue. MnDOT highway camera footage showed a red SUV following the victim as he pursued the suspects on 36. Lewis Jr.’s father, Shawn Eric Lewis Sr., was the registered owner of the SUV.

The victim later told police that he ran into Philip William Davids Sr., a man he knew from his prior gambling, while at the casino the night of the attack. He said he believed Davids was following him, so he went to the bathroom to try to lose him. Davids followed him into the bathroom and struck up a conversation.

When he left the bathroom, he saw Davids make a phone call. He left the casino and saw Davids trying to catch up to him.

Investigators discovered through analyzing cellphones that Jacox-Mann and Lewis Sr. made 20 calls to each other in the hours leading up to and shortly after the robbery.

Phone data also showed that Davids followed the victim home from the same casino one night exactly two weeks before the attack, according to prosecutors. Lewis Sr., meanwhile, was waiting near the Mahtomedi home.

The victim told the Pioneer Press after a June 2025 court hearing that law enforcement was able to retrieve the stolen cash. He also said that he has multiple health issues from the attack, including headaches and pain in his knees.

Sentencings

As part of his plea agreement, Jacox faced up to 90 days in jail.

His attorney asked Washington County District Judge Siv Mjanger for a 30-day jail sentence and that he serve the time on electronic home monitoring, saying that he takes care of his autistic son while working as a personal care assistant.

Mjanger sentenced him to 60 days on electronic home monitoring. As part of the plea agreement, he was given a stay of imposition, which means the felony conviction will become a misdemeanor if he successfully completes the conditions of his probation.

The four other defendants all pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting first-degree aggravated robbery for their role in the attack.

Lewis Jr., 38, of Bloomington, was sentenced to 58 months in prison in June 2025.

A month later, Lewis Sr., 55, of Minneapolis, was sentenced to 67 months in prison, with prosecutor Nick Hydukovich saying at the hearing he was the “ringleader, the hub between the spokes that everyone else was acting, in terms of tracking the victim’s location, getting the information from one person, passing it along to the next person.”

In August, Davids, 62, of Chisago City, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, while Jacox Mann, 36, of Golden Valley, received a 58-month prison term.

“With today’s sentencing, all five people responsible for this violent robbery have been held accountable,” Washington County Attorney Kevin Magnuson said in a statement to the Pioneer Press. “Violent crimes like this have no place in Washington County. These sentences reflect the seriousness of what each defendant did, and I hope they bring the victim some measure of closure.”
