KINGSTON >> What looked like a pitcher’s duel over the first three frames turned into a blowout as Silver Lake showed its offensive prowess from top to bottom.
The Lakers put across six runs in the fourth and added six more combined in the fifth and sixth to get the mercy-rule victory over nonleague opponent Lincoln-Sudbury 12-0 at home Friday afternoon.
“That’s why we scheduled (Lincoln-Sudbury). We want to play high quality teams,” said Silver Lake coach Tony Pina about the tough matchup. “We just balled out today and put a lot of pressure on them defensively.”
Silver Lake (7-0) had two baserunners on in the first three frames, but Kelsey Blanchette kept them at bay to keep it scoreless.
Senior captain Delaney Moquin then retired the side in order for the third time in four innings before the Lakers came up to hit in the fourth. They sent nine batters to the dish and scored six times on six hits with the big blow coming on a two-out, three-run home run by senior captain Madyson Bryan to make it 6-0 after four.
“It’s definitely a good feeling,” Bryan said about being able to push runs across. “Once one person gets us going, I think we’re really good at keeping it going down the line. If one person, like the bottom of the order, gets a hit, it stays going through the top of the order.”
It all started as sophomore Elise Tartaglione (2-of-3, walk, run) reached on an infield single to short. After a fielder’s choice for senior captain Kenna Slyker, junior Miranda Johnson reached on a bunt single to third, followed by a single to left for senior captain Alanna Waters to load the bases for freshman Megan Arseneau.
Arseneau (4-of-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs) delivered with an RBI single to put Silver Lake in front 1-0. Two batters later Moquin added a two-run single to make it 3-0 before the big homer for Bryan.
“That’s something ‘I’ve been impressed about in terms of our offense — our patience and seeing a lot of pitches,” Pina said. “We might be down in a count early, but working a count until it’s favorable to us to see a pitch for us to hit. I thought we did a really nice job out there.”
Lincoln-Sudbury (5-2) kept attacking as senior Sarah Danielson led off the fifth with a double. Moquin responded by striking out the next three batters on nine pitches.
“Moquin is a warrior,” said Pina. “She comes in with a game plan and she doesn’t get rattled — leadoff double, but stay the course. When she is hitting her spots and her spin is on, she’s as tough to hit as anybody.”
Moquin allowed just two hits while striking out 11 in six shutout innings on just 63 pitches.
Silver Lake worked the count in its final two innings as Tartaglione and Slyker walked to start the fifth and came around to score on an Arseneau single and a two-run single to center for sophomore Anna Craft to push the lead to 9-0.
The Lakers then pushed across three more runs in the sixth to end the contest as Johnson hit a single to left with the bases loaded to score Bryan. A bases-loaded walk for Waters made it 11-0 before an RBI single for Arseneau capped the scoring.
