The prep sports season all but officially wrapped up this past weekend as Marin’s top track athletes competed on the biggest stage — the State Meet at Buchanan High in Clovis on Saturday.

San Rafael’s Ellie McCuskey-Hay, Redwood High’s Annalise Horn, and The Branson School’s 4×800 relay team were among the standouts.

Elsewhere, a pair of Tam golfers qualified for the State Championship. On the baseball diamond, Marin Catholic and Tam were the last two Marin teams left standing.

Ellie McCuskey-Hay, St. Ignatius girls track >> The San Rafael resident had the best weekend of any Marin athlete at the State Meet, making it to the finals of all three events she competed in — the long jump, the 100 meters, and the 200 meters. McCuskey-Hay’s best performance came in the long jump where her mark of 19 feet, 3 inches was good enough to put her in fourth place. McCuskey-Hay also placed seventh in the 100 with a time of 11.63 seconds — one day after running a lifetime best of 11.43 to win her heat in the prelims. McCuskey-Hay capped a busy weekend by taking eighth place in the 200 with a time of 24.31.

Annalise Horn, Redwood girls track >> Marin’s second best finish at the State Meet came from Horn, who put up a distance of 18’9.5? to take sixth place in the long jump. Horn set a personal record of 19 feet the week prior at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions, finishing in second place.

Maya Gidney, Imogen Brown, Farah Allen, and Hailey Sellers, Branson girls track >> The Branson quartet competed in the distance carnival portion of the State Meet as one of 17 teams to qualify for the final race in the 4×800 relay. Gidney, Brown, Allen, and Sellers finished in 11th place with a time of 9:04.27 — almost 10 seconds faster than the time they ran a week prior while finishing second at the NCS Meet of Champions.

Ben Friedman and Hayden Thill, Tam boys golf >> Friedman and Thill both qualified for the State Championship for the second year in a row following strong rounds at the NorCal Championship at Berkeley Country Club last Tuesday. Friedman finished tied for fifth place with a 1-under-par 71 and qualified as the second best individual at the event. Thill wasn’t too far behind Friedman, carding a 1-over-par 73 to finish in a tie for 12th place. Thill qualified as one of the nine best individual golfers at the event. The State Championship is set to be held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach on Tuesday.

Johnny Greco and Carson Davis, Marin Catholic baseball >> Greco and Davis played key roles as MC picked up a 4-3 victory against Northgate on Wednesday to advance to the North Coast Section Division III championship. Greco hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to score Wade Untermann and Davis — who were on base after hitting back-to-back singles — and give MC the lead for good at 3-2. Davis also worked 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and three earned runs against four strikeouts. MC went on to lose 6-1 in the title game against California. Cooper Mitchell had two of MC’s three hits in the final.

Will Gensler, Tam baseball >> The Red-tailed Hawks were largely held in check during their 6-1 loss to Rancho Cotate in the NCS D-II semifinal on Tuesday. Gensler provided the big highlight for Tam, hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning after the Red-tailed Hawks had managed just one hit to that point. Gensler tied for the team lead this season in home runs (3) and was second in hits (24).

Gracie Murphy, St. Vincent de Paul softball >> The Novato resident drove in a season-high four runs as the Mustangs won the NCS D-VI title with a 14-2 victory against Willits on Friday. Murphy, a senior catcher, hit three doubles and scored twice to pace the Mustangs on offense.
