The Class 3A state tournaments began their regional rounds on Friday, with three area teams participating in the festivities between the boys and girls brackets.
The Propect Ridge boys gained a monumental win in their first-round contest before falling short of victory on Centauri’s home court on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, after running through districts and squeezing their way into the 32-team girls bracket, PRA and Lyons could not come up with the right recipe to score upsets.
A look at the weekend for the programs:
3A Boys
Centauri 53, Prospect Ridge 35 (Saturday): At 20-3, the Centauri Falcons are primed to make a run at the 3A title, and Prospect Ridge couldn’t carry momentum over from a Friday win against Banning Lewis into Saturday’s regional championship. A 75-24 win over Banning Lewis brought the Miners their 13th win to extend their program-best season win total.
3A Girls
Peyton 53, Prospect Ridge 33: It was a brutal matchup in the first round for the Miners, facing top-seeded and undefeated Peyton. However, it was not always a runaway game for Peyton, as the Miners kept it close through the first two quarters and only trailed 11-10 at halftime. The host Panthers eventually proved too strong, with a 20-point third quarter turning the tides heavily in their favor. Prospect Ridge finished its season with an 8-15 overall record.
Yuma 56, Lyons 33: The Lions faced an uphill battle at No. 4 seed Yuma on Friday, and the game unfortunately was over early after Yuma came out firing and ran away with a 12-1 lead at the end of the first quarter only to extend that to 36-12 by half. LHS did outscore Yuma 21-20 in the second half, but Emma Rayl’s 17 points helped the host team cruise. Lyons ended the season above .500, however, at 12-11.
