APTOS >> Aptos High sophomore Scarlett Stateler flexed for a photographer while standing atop the podium with one of her four medals in hand at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Track and Field Championships. Her pose was both justified and deserved Saturday.

Stateler not only helped the host Mariners repeat as the girls team champion, she was named the meet’s highest scoring female with 28 points to earn the coveted Bob Emswiler Award.

She PR’d in the triple jump (33 feet, 6 inches) for the win, took first in the shot put (26-10) and third in the discus (77-6). She also joined Natasha Newcombe, Teagan Chevalier, and Bella Hartnett for second in the 4×400 relay (4 minutes, 15.28 seconds).

“It means so much to me,” said Stateler, a standout soccer player who is competing on Aptos’ track and field for the first time. “Today was such a good meet, and I feel like I was able to come out here and perform. I PR’d in triple jump, which was awesome. I was just super happy that I could do something good for the team.”

Aptos (170 points) was followed in the standings by Santa Cruz (137), San Lorenzo Valley (71), Scotts Valley (66), Soquel (43), Harbor (24), and Mount Madonna (9).

The top two finishers in each event secured automatic berths to the Central Coast Section semifinals at Gilroy High on May 17. The CCS Championships take place the following Saturday at Gilroy.

Santa Cruz sophomore Joy Roberts took first in both the 100 (12.71) and 200 (25.65). She edged junior teammate Joy Hilldale (12.99) in the 100 and held off Aptos sophomore Hartnett (26.18), her season-long rival, in the 200.

Roberts, hampered by a thigh injury, said she not only wants to better her times, she also wants to beat some of the competition she faced at the CCS Top 8 Invite on April 19 in Los Gatos.

“I want to get in the really low 12s, high 11s,” she said. “That’s my goal.”

Roberts also competed on the two victorious relay teams. She teamed with Francesca Garces, Hilldale, and Amelia Palm for the win in the 4×100 relay (50.17), and joined Lily Gingery, Heidi Green, and Palm for the win in the 4×400 relay (4:06.76).

Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve took first in the 400 (57.57), ahead of Hartnett (59.10), and took second in the 800 (2:18.93) behind Green (2:16.44), a senior who is committed to Santa Clara University.

Decleve will only run the 800 at CCS.

“I wanted to run the 400; the 400 has sort of been my race of high school,” Decleve said. “I love that race and I love competing in it. I haven’t run that many 400s this season, so I wanted to run a good one to finish the season off. Now, going to the 800, there’s going to be incredible competition with the girls. There was incredible competition here.”

Santa Cruz freshman Isla Roake took first in both the 1,600 (5:15.92) and 3,200 (11:33.45). She edged Soquel freshman Taylor Glinkowski (5:16.55) for the win in the 1,600 and survived a personal-best from Aptos junior Maya Schiro in the 3,200 (11:41.70).

Roake said she didn’t focus on her times, just moving on to CCS.

“I’m just happy I could qualify; that was the goal,” Roake said. “I’m glad I got first.”

Roake and Green teamed with Palm and Athena Pantos for the win in the 4×800 relay (9:51.33), which was held Thursday.

SLV senior Naomi Seastrom took first in the 100 hurdles (17.06) ahead of runner-up Haisley Flanagan (18.26), a freshman at Santa Cruz, and took second in the 300 hurdles (46.59), where she was edged Aptos junior Ella Boyes (46.03).

Boyes’ time was the third best in school history.

Aptos sophomore Ellie Marta took first in the discus (96-0), and Soquel junior Summer Shields (85-9) took second.

SLV senior Orea Pollock took first in the high jump (5-0). Harbor sophomore Cecile Novembre (5-0) took second and matched a school record set 27 years ago.

Aptos senior Izzy Graff, who will compete for Occidental College next season, took first in the long jump (15-8.5) and Santa Cruz senior Maeve Golliher was second (15-7) after posting a PR.

Graff also took second in the triple jump (32-7).

Soquel junior Summer Shields took second in the shot put (26-6) after finishing four inches shy of Stateler.

Santa Cruz senior Meilia Nee took first in the pole vault (10-0) on Thursday and Aptos sophomore Bella Hernandez was second (8-0).
