



Gregg Popovich stepped down as coach of the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, ending a three-decade run that saw him lead the team to five NBA championships, become the league’s all-time wins leader and earn induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
He will remain as team president.
Popovich says “while my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach.”
Mitch Johnson, a Spurs assistant who filled in for Popovich for the season’s final 77 games, becomes the team’s head coach.
Grizzlies make Iisalo first Finnish-born head coach
Tuomas Iisalo, who was appointed interim coach of the Memphis Grizzlies in the waning days of the regular season, has been given the full-time job and becomes the first Finnish-born coach in the NBA. Terms of Iisalo’s contract were not released.
He joined the team as the lead assistant this past season. Iisalo took over the team on March 28 after the Grizzlies returned home from an 0-5 road trip.
The road trip led to the firing of Taylor Jenkins, the winningest coach in Grizzlies franchise history.
Bucks’ Lillard has surgery on left Achilles tendon
Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard had surgery to repair the left Achilles tendon he tore Sunday in a playoff loss to the Indiana Pacers.
The Bucks said Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery in Los Angeles, with consultation from team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Carole Vetter.
The Bucks announced Monday that the guard had torn his Achilles tendon.

Trout going on IL with bone bruise in left knee
Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout is headed back to the 10-day injured list because of a bone bruise in his surgically repaired left knee.
Angels manager Ron Washington made the announcement Thursday night following a 10-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers. The team said there is no structural damage to Trout’s knee.
Chisholm out 4-to-6 weeks with hurt oblique
Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to miss four-to-six weeks because of a strained right oblique.
Chisholm was placed on the 10-day injured list three days after getting hurt during a swing in a game at the Baltimore Orioles. Manager Aaron Boone said Chisholm has a high-grade strain.
Casas stretchered off with left knee injury
Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was carried off the field on a stretcher due to a significant left knee injury after the 25-year-old awkwardly fell near first base in the bottom of the second inning of a game against the Twins.
Casas sent a slow roller up the first-base line that Twins starter Joe Ryan bobbled before his under-hand throw to first baseman Ty France.
Casas was ruled safe as Ryan was charged with an error, though it was clear something was wrong with Casas, who has started the past three opening days at first base for Boston.
Red Sox put Buehler on IL with shoulder bursitis
The Boston Red Sox placed right-handed starter Walker Buehler on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder bursitis, one day after the team sent him from Toronto to Boston to undergo tests.
Buehler is 4-1 with a 4.28 ERA in his six starts since signing a one-year, $21.05 million contract with the Red Sox this past offseason.

Morales hits two homers in victory at Columbus
Jeferson Morales hit two home runs for the first time in his career and the Saints claimed a rain-shortened, six-inning win at Columbus, 6-4.
Royce Lewis finished his fifth Major League rehab game 0-4.
Travis Adams earned the win with two ininngs of scoreless relief of starting pitcher Marco Raya.
The two teams will try for the fourth time this week to play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:05 p.m.

Rangers hire Sullivan after Penguins ouster
The New York Rangers have hired Mike Sullivan as coach, days after he and the Pittsburgh Penguins agreed to part ways.
General manager Chris Drury announced the move, bringing in the organization’s top candidate who was out of work for less than a full business week. Sullivan replaces Peter Laviolette.
Sullivan, who coached Pittsburgh to back to back Stanley Cups titles in 2016 and ’17, is tasked with trying to turn the Rangers back into an immediate contender.

Schwartz dominates Michigan in victory
Junior Sydney Schwartz hurled a three-hit shutout to lead the Gophers (20-28, 5-15 Big Ten) over Michigan (32-19, 9-11) by a score of 4-0.
Schwartz (10-14) went the distance for Minnesota, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out five.
The Gophers took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minnesota plated two runs when senior Taylor Krapf left the yard with senior Margaret Tobias aboard.
The Gophers also added runs in the second and fifth innings.

Antonelli becomes youngest F1 pole winner
Kimi Antonelli became the youngest pole-winner of any Formula 1 event in history when the 18-year-old Mercedes driver won the top starting spot for the sprint race ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
He will start Saturday’s sprint race alongside current F1 points leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren. It’s the first time since 2009 an Italian driver has won any pole in F1.
