Icaro Fernandes, 36, of Marina was arrested Sunday as a suspect in a felony hit-and-run involving a 14-year-old pedestrian in Pacific Grove.

About 9 p.m. Jan. 25, the Pacific Grove Police Department received a call regarding a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at Lighthouse Avenue and Alder Street, according to a news release.

The teen was running across the intersection when he was hit by a blue Toyota Prius. The car then fled the scene heading toward Monterey. Paramedics treated the pedestrian at the scene and he was later transported to the hospital by his parents.

Police asked the public to be on the lookout for the blue Prius and about 1:30 p.m. the next day, a good Samaritan called in a sighting. The person was able to provide police with a license plate number as they witnessed the Prius driving through Pacific Grove.

Through the license plate number and the FLOCK camera system, officers were able to confirm the car was in Pacific Grove around the time of the accident. Fernandez was located, arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail for felony hit-and-run.

“The community’s vigilance, tips, and shared information were instrumental in leading to the suspect’s arrest, demonstrating the power of collective action in ensuring public safety,” said the press release. “Pacific Grove Police Department encourages anyone who sees something suspicious to call 911 immediately and report the activity. Your vigilance is crucial in keeping our community safe.”
