HARTLAND >> The Bloomfield Hills Black Hawks exploded for four goals in the second period and dispatched Troy United 5-0 in the opening round of the Division 1 playoffs Thursday night.
After a scoreless first period, Bloomfield Hills finally opened the scoring early in the second when Aiden Ben-Ezra found a loose puck to the side of the Troy United net and jammed it in.
Troy United had a chance to tie it midway through the period when they were awarded a five-minute power play. But instead, it was Bloomfield Hills who bore down and extended its lead. The Black Hawks got a shorthanded goal when Preston Lumberg set up Dominik Dostal on a two-on-one break for a backside one-timer.
Just 45 seconds later, and 15 seconds after the power play had expired, Lumberg converted a breakaway of his own to make it 3-0, and Bloomfield Hills was off and running.
“We came out a little slow to start, a little passive, and thought everything would come to us. That’s where our goalie (Rocco Colosimo) made a couple of key saves that could have changed the game,” Bloomfield Hills head coach D.J. Fichter said. “But it turned into a team game in the second (period). That’s how we should have started.”
Meanwhile, Troy United kept Colosimo busy. United outshot the Black Hawks 34-27 on the evening. But it couldn’t find a way to beat Colosimo, who simply swallowed up everything fired his way.
“The opportunities were there, and I kept saying every game against this team that, for some reason, this goalie is somewhat hot against us, and we can’t put the puck past him. We can’t find a way,” Troy United head coach Joshua Brown said.
United’s forecheck was often effective in helping them build zone time and cycle the puck, but in the end, while it resulted in shots, it did not result in any goals, as Colosimo in net along with the Black Hawk defense came up with all the answers when United’s attack posed them questions.
Travis Stafford eventually added a fourth goal for Bloomfield Hills later in the second period, and Lumberg would get his second goal of the evening early in the third period to close out the scoring for Bloomfield Hills.
The Black Hawks (18-6) move on to Friday night’s regional semifinals where they will face top-ranked Detroit Catholic Central.
“I’m just pumped for the kids. We have one more game to play. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow,” Fichter said. “I’m just proud of the boys. They worked hard, and they earned it.”
Troy United finishes the year 16-10 and much improved from a season ago.
“From last year to this year is a huge turnaround. Our goals for and our goals against are just the opposite, and that’s what I can always praise these guys for. I’m proud of them for working hard every day with that,” Brown said.
Troy United will graduate 10 players, but are slated to bring back 13 members of this season’s team.
