Few names are better known in San Pedro than that of the Trani family.
It was 100 years ago that a young immigrant named Filippo Trani opened a restaurant in the bustling port town and called it “The Majestic Cafe.”
It was the start of what was to span four generations, two landmark restaurants and a culinary footprint that spread across the Los Angeles area.
A free (except for bar order service) centennial celebration to commemorate that history and the family’s community roots — along with the launch of a new Trani restaurant, The Majestic — will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. today at Trani’s Dockside Station, the family’s newest waterfront restaurant at Berth 84, 311 E. 22nd St.
The Majestic, which the family aims to open by the end of this summer, will be on the ground floor of the newly redeveloped Harbor House Apartments, 921 S. Beacon St., overlooking the Main Channel of the Port of Los Angeles. The new restaurant, while recalling a return to the Trani family’s original restaurant name, will focus on an experience they are calling “Prohibition Era Nuevo” while providing a front-window view of the shipping channel and a focus on San Pedro’s evolving culinary scene.
“For our family, this isn’t just about our story — it’s San Pedro’s story,” said Dustin Trani, fourth-generation chef and owner. “We’ve watched this community grow, evolve, and now emerge as one of the most exciting food scenes in Los Angeles.”
Longtime patrons and food lovers are all invited to the Saturday celebration, which will include food — including specialty dishes — and drinks and live music. Dress is semi-formal.
The Trani family legacy in San Pedro, which began in 1925, has been a mainstay in San Pedro and is known for its culinary fare in the Italian tradition with California coastal ingredients.
