Ann Kenfield Graf passed away on September 20, 2021. She was 69 years old and is dearly missed.
Ann was born on April 9, 1952 in Oakland, California. She was the first of five daughters born to Nancy and Norman Kenfield. She was the granddaughter of William and Ruth Hudson of Rossmoor, California, and Oliver and Margaret Kenfield of Murphy’s, California.
Ann grew up in San Jose and Yuba City, California. She graduated from Yuba City High School in 1971. Ann went to college at University of California, Berkeley (Go Bears!) graduating with a degree in History. She received her juris doctor degree from the University of the Pacific, Mc- George School of Law in 1978 and passed the California State Bar Exam later that year on her first try.
Ann was employed by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, retiring in 2011 after 32 years of service. She was a fierce prosecutor who defended the rights of the state but always with a sensitivity to the defendant.
Ann was never one who only saw one side. She met her husband, Raymond Graf, one summer at the University of California’s “Lair of the Bear” Camp during a singles week. They were married in 1986 in Walnut Creek and have resided there since.
Ann was a woman of Intelligence, generosity, passion and inclusiveness. She gave freely her time, her home, her support and her opinion. Passionate about her family, her music, her dogs, her belief in God and in doing the “right” thing, Ann never tiptoed into an interest - she cannonballed into it!
Many people have spoken about her inclusiveness. Once you met Ann, you immediately felt her interest, her openness to you and her friendship. She moved people into her inner circle quickly. She had a talent of making you feel important and valid. She had a unique and genuine way of being your friend. Ann was Ann.
Ann is survived by her much loved husband, Ray, her four sisters: Sara, Barbara, Donna and Karen, her brother-in-laws Tom, Lance, Matt and Dave and several nieces and nephews and spouses (who are who they are, due to her influence) LaKisha (Dustin), James (Niki), Billy (Katie), Brittany (Kevin), Hanna, Alexandra (Joseph), Matthew (Danielle), Amanda, Leah, Mara and Estelle. Her great nephews and nieces included Anna, Benjamin, Christopher, Ellie, Scott and Jacob. She is also survived by Ray’s family: Father-in-law, Victor Graf, brother-in-laws Morri (Diane) and Fred (Karen) and their children.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Nancy and Norm Kenfield, her grandparents, Ruth and William Hudson, and Oliver and Margaret Kenfield, and mother-in-law, Louise Graf, along with several loved aunts, uncles and cousins.
This would not be complete without mentioning the many pets that were blessed to live in Ann and Ray’s house. After starting life together with a cat and a golden retriever, Ann and Ray became enthusiastic and devoted greyhound owners and members of the Golden State Greyhound Rescue community. Each of the dogs fostered and/or adopted were lucky to feel the love, warmth and safety brought by the heart and hearth of the Graf home.
A memorial service with light refreshments will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek. All who knew Ann are welcome. In lieu of flowers, everyone is invited to make donations to their favorite charity in her memory and to make sure they spend time with their fur babies.
